My Dad puts down about one every year. He typically uses a .38 Special but he has used a .22LR |

Most of the traveling butchers use a 22 short for cows. Goes in on side and bounces off the other. Seen a couple so dead they didnt fall down for a few seconds.

Bears and moose have been killed with .22. IIRC correctly .22 is used regularly on caribou when shooting them from boats while doing river crossings up north.
From out game regs. Big game MAY NOT be taken by the following methods:
Hunting big game using a rimfire firearm, EXCEPT you mayuse .22 caliber rimfire cartridges to take swimming caribou from a boat in Units 23 and 26. |

Most people don't think of cows and horses as being pest. I think my question was plain enough to understand. Pest, rats, possums, rabbits, etc.

I know an Inuit that killed a polar bear with a .22 rifle. It took him a couple hours but bascially he circled the animal with a snowmobile and just kept shooting till it bled out.

I have a buddy thats taken a few coyotes with one, but I don't know how he got close enough to tell you the truth. I would say as long as you can reasonably get within the distance it takes to place an accurate shot (within a few inches of POA) you should be okay. My girlfriends Marlin .22 has dispatched an unknown number of opossums, raccoons, ground squirrels, etc. Basically anything that can thrash a trash can, or tear up the yard we have taken with ease at 50ish yards.

Reliably, with fair shot placement? Anything smaller than a bobcat. For bobcat, coyote and up I'd use something larger. Heck, I'd rather use a 22 Magnum for raccoon.
With perfect shot placement? Just about anything. |

Every oppossum and racoon I have killed has been with my .22 magnum. easy pickins. I believe people use them on gators to avoid ruining the skins... and that's impressive

It is all about shot placement.
In his books, Peter Capstick tells the story of a couple of African Professional hunters getting in an argument about the .22 and drinking to excess. One said that he could kill an elephant with a .22, so they decided to try it and see. He snuck up close to an elephant in high grass, and placed one shot under the elephant's front leg as he took a step forward. It hit the heart. The elephant ran off and in a few minutes, they could hear it drop. It was as dead as charity. |

I remember a while ago, over 10 years, I read an article in a gun magazine that stated the .22 short has taken 1 of each mammal on the face of the planet. The caveat was that the author didn't recommend anyone trying that at home.

farmers have been using 22lr as a barn gun to put down lame catle for years.. as long as they the shot placement is directly center of that little swirl mark on their foreheads.. just a touch above there eyes
drops them like a bag of hammers.. and they feel no pain ETA: im quite surprised on how much i know about 22lr killing animals.. |
