I'm interviewing for a position at a tobacco company, and some of my friends have given me grief for it.
I don't have a problem with it, but it seems many people do. Would you? |
Legal job that pays the bills............................no problem here.
One of my best friend's family raised it on a small farm in NC for a living.
They never seemed to feel guilty about it, and while I respected them for being farmers, I wonder if they did have some pangs of guilt somewhere about it. |
Would you work for an ammo company? How about a firearm factory? Bomb making factory?
Al "the snail" Gore came from tobacco. Don't see him handing any of his profits from "carbon credits" to atone for the families past "sin" of tobacco. |
umm if people chose to damage their bodies for marginal benefit why should I feel bad for supplying?

"Ethical problem" with working for a legal industry? Are you serious?
My only concern would be the contract I was able to negotiate and would the paychecks bounce. |
Not at all. I smoke, I drink, I chew. I work for big oil. I own guns.
Its my life, I support freedom & liberty. |
No. It is a (semi) free country. If one wants to abuse alcohol/tobacco/coffee/whatever you should be allowed to.
No, why is that even a question if they are hiring.
Would you refuse to gather up eggs, or milk cows if all your buddies were vegans? Go of it. |
I don't understand how working for a tobacco company could be considered an ethical problem.

My primary concern would also be job security in that industry. And guilt?! Fuck that noise. I work at a casino and a liquor store. Dealing in vices is good business. |

"Ethical problem" with working for a legal industry? Are you serious? My only concern would be the contract I was able to negotiate and would the paychecks bounce. It is not a legal thing. It is a moral thing. Why would anybody want to work for an industry that provides an addictive cancer causing drug that kills almost a half million Americans each year? Maybe that is a dumb question because a lot of people will do anything for money. |

Quoted: "Ethical problem" with working for a legal industry? Are you serious? Ask our resident Christians if they'd have an ethical problem working for a legal hardcore porn business. Just for giggles. |

How about working in the corn industry? after all high fructose corn syrup is probably as bad for you in the long run as tobacco... |
I wouldnt feel bad at all. Do you feel bad for people when they drink beer, eat junk food, etc.... If its a job you'd like that pays good thats all that matters.
hell no.
I don't give a shit what I make so long as it is legal and puts food on the table- |
no,
I worked for Cat and I didn't feel guilty about destroying the earth I worked for Briggs & Stratton and I didn't feel bad about all the CO2 the put out or the fingers they chop off I was offered a job to make ammo for the military, didn't feel bad about the people that it would kill I make weapons for the gov and don't feel bad about the people they will kill Do people at fisher price feel guilty when some little johnny dipsh!t gets hurt with one of their toys? Do people that make cars feel guilty about all the people that die in them? People that smoke/chew made the decission to use tobacoo. They have to live with the problems just like people that drink beer/liquer Did people feel guilty about buying Kraft food, Nabisco, Miller beer products when Philip Morris owned them? They only own Miller now. You have friends that have ideals that they do not want to alter, but the hard truth is most companies your going to work for are going to do something you dont agree/believe in. |

Hell i was debating on starting a tobacco shop not too long ago...

Depends on the job,
If it was a job say marketing the smokes to kids or women who are pregnant, I think I would take a pass. If it was a job say improving the productivity of a production plant, sure why not. I dont smoke however one of my largests customers for years was doing a component that was used by Phillip Morris. |

Why would anybody want to work for an industry that provides an addictive cancer causing drug that kills almost a half million Americans each year? Maybe because he wants to work and needs the money? If you haven't noticed, the economy isn't exactly booming right now and unemployment is 10%. If he doesn't take this job, you can damn well be assured someone else will. Either way, the product is going to reach the consumer. Period. So what is there to feel guilty about? I'd feel worse if I elected to brush off a potentially good job opportunity out of the retarded notion that my personal protest might prevent someone from smoking. |
No. In reality most big tobacco companies have become much more responsible over the years. Anti-smokers might paint them as bad, but they are just offering a product to people who want it. They rarely advertise anymore anyway. When they do advertise, its usually in places where smokers are. I have much more of a problem with anti-smokers than tobacco companies.

Hell no This. You aren't forcing a whole pack of cigarettes in their mouths and making them smoke, so no. If they start it's a personal choice. |

Short answer, no. Smoking is a choice that you make yourself. By working there, I wouldn't be holding a gun to your head saying do it or die.
Not a smoker. |
