We have been using Dells almost exclusively for a year now. I have 12 guys in the field with them and the only trouble I have had was a ribbon cable in the hinge made one of the displays go screwy.
Being high use machines (in and out of the case several times a day hooking up serial cables) these laptops see a lot of abuse. It seems like the batteries taper out at about 30 months or so. The ones I have had to buy were about 145.00 or so. These are approx. 2 year old machines that we bought used, so that should give you a good idea about their ability to last. -elliott |

Dell is the corporate weenies laptop of choice because Dell supports their stuff well and that makes the life of the technical support guys easier. Dells (AFAIK) are pretty good. I haven't heard anyone say much bad about them.
However, if you're getting yourself one for personal use, and you don't plan on being a road-warrior with it, check out Winbook [url]www.winbook.com[/url]. I'm on my second one, and I haven't found anybody else that gives you as much bang for your buck. They're a little heavier and maybe a little slower, but you get more features for the same money. I have a Dell Inspiron and my department owns about 30. They have all held up well with only moderate fuss. There were a few original lemons, but those were sent back immediately for replacements. IMHO, Dell makes a solid product with an exellent warranty. The quality of the warranty does not extend to promptness of telephone service however.
My rankings as per my experience: 1. IBM 2. Sony 3. Dell 4. Toshiba (no patriot should buy) 5. Winbook 6. Gateway 7. HP 8. 9. 200. Compaq. |

Observer: HP vs. Toshiba laptops.. s...comments that Dell laptops weren't very good. We own 3 HP, 2 Dell, & 3 Sony laptops, they're all used (and abused) hard. I cant complain about any of them. [i]Toshiba.... Well, phuck Toshiba! They may work just fine (& "sewer rat may tast like punkin' pie"), but I wouldn't know. Because I'll never buy anything made by Toshiba again in my life, -- the SOBs stole + $6,700.00 from me![/i] |

At work, all we use are dell inspiron 4000's. Never had any problems except one which would lose the keyboard functions once a week. Dell replaced ASAP and we have had no further incidents. Highly recommend them.

Before Nortel laid everybody but the Board of Directors and the janitor off, we had hundreds of Dells out in the field with our installers, and they held up very well. I'm on my Latitude CSX500 right now, and I'm really happy with it.

As many here know, I am an Administrator in a public school district.
We have 1500 Dell desktops, from GL+ to GX200. We have 100 Dell laptops, from the CPi's to the Dell 8100's. The reason I keep buying them is because they work and my tech's like them because they don't have a high rate of failure. Av. |

My team supports several hundred. They are the preferred system, desktop or laptop. Mainly for what has been said before. Techs like them as they hold up hardware wise and have a good support site on the internet. Customers like them because they hang together, stylish, good features.

I am on a Dell Inspiron 4000 right now. I have had this computer just over a year now. It used to do some very wierd stuff. It would lock up. My trouble with my dell was fixed when i got rid of the wad of shit they call Windows ME!!!!! I installed Xp on it and WOW! No problems!!! Also, my hard drive failed several months ago. Dell's tech people are awesome. They are very friendly and helpful. They over nighted me a hard drive for free.
IBM is my fav. I am thinking of getting another desktop. I am thinking about an HP or a Sony. |

I don't use my laptop unless I am traveling, but I haven't had any problems with my Dell and I know if I did they would fix it.
They have the best customer service, period. |

My company (life insurance) has over 3000 of them and we have had many, many of them with the bad cable to the screen. We had Toshiba's before and they worked well, but the cases cracked like crazy. The other persistent problem we have with the Dell is the screws holding the back on constantly work their way out, which causes it to stop working, but is easily fixed once you know to watch for it. I like the touchpad mouse. |

Nobody I know particularly likes Dells. Boeing had a real problem with the ones they'd bought a few years ago; I remember that Dell eventually, finally, agreed to take them all back, but then refurbished them and re-sold them to employees, who also had trouble and complained. Something to do with a chip for the keyboard burning out, I think.
Maybe they've improved in the past three years. All I know is, people who buy them are like people who buy Rugers -- they kinda sigh and then say that it was a good value for the money. But if that's the best that can be said, clearly the product is not especially good. . . . |

beieng a dell certified tech here is what you can expect to go wrong withyour dell.
Frequently broken ribbon cables on the displays. backlights on the lcd panels Keyboards Touchpad Buttons These are the most frequent failures i see. Also keep in mind Dell has one of the weakest cases of any on the market. They are cheap non reenforced plastic and do very little to protect the system From a compatability standpoint the only gripe i have seen is that for some strange reason MANY sony lcd projector systems do not seem to work properly attached to most dell laptops. mike |

I had a Toshiba Laptop that was a complete POS. Their support sucked and I ended up with a doorstop out of the deal. I replaced it with a Dell and will never own anything else. Dell is the best company I have ever worked with.

I've had three Toshiba laptops and every one has performed perfectly with no problems at all. They are very good buys for the money.

I give Dell laptops "2 thumbs up"
I used a Dell Latitude for 3 years in a industrial environment. I work with 8 other guys, and all have Dell Latitudes. We have to carry our laptops out into the plant and hook up to different controls. They get banged around quite a bit and exposed to a lot of dust. About a year ago, some new project money came in so I ordered a new Latitude. Same excellent performance so far. We have to add lots of "odd" adapter cards to our computers to talk to different controls, and the Latitudes keep on humpin'. |

something else to consider. Dell is having financial problems and currently looking for a new national serv. company to take over warranty work.
