Man with plastic gun shot by Reno Police

Washoe County Sheriff's OfficeReno, NV –– The man shot by Reno police officers Wednesday night at a downtown motel threatened them with a plastic replica pistol that had a red laser sight, Washoe County sheriff’s investigators said Thursday.

Just before 9 p.m., officers responded to a report of a suicidal man with a gun at the Rancho Motel, 777 E. Fourth St.

Charles James Bishop, 44, of Reno refused to drop the pistol. When he raised the weapon and the laser moved towards officers, they fired. Bishop remained Thursday in Renown Regional Medical Center, reported in critical condition.

Police and civilian witnesses said the pistol appeared to be real with no markings of a toy gun, sheriff’s Capt. David Nikoley said in a news release. He did not say how many times the officers fired.

The subject made threats to harm himself and any officers, Nikoley said. The officers had safely removed a female occupant from the room before Bishop confronted them and refused repeated commands to drop the gun.

At around 9:04 p.m., police were responding to a report of a suicidal subject at the motel when they encountered Bishop, who had been making threats that he was going to hurt himself and any officers who tried to help him, Keast said. Officers were able to safely remove a female occupant from the room before being confronted by Bishop, who was armed with a handgun, Keast said.

Bishop allegedly ignored police commands and raised the gun towards police, before two officers shot him, Keast said.

A Regional Officer Involved Shooting team, comprised of Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, Sparks Police Department, Reno Police Department and Washoe County District Attorney’s Office are conducting a joint investigation into the shooting.

The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on routine administrative leave pending an investigation, Keast said.
