FUCK.

I spilt about a cup of juice on my keyboard. It didn't 'hurt' it, but now some keys are sticky.

I need a new laptop - but there is NO way I can afford one now.

Any options?

Take off keys and swab out by hand?

Should of got a protection plan.  They would have repaired it for free.

This, if out of warranty and such.

Goes without saying that you shouldn't turn the laptop on until the alcohol you clean the keys with has evaporated.  Pull the cord and battery.

And don't hold juice over thousand dollar electronics.

Yank the battery out..

If you are proficient enough to tackle taking the laptop apart, Pull the keyboard out. hose the keyboard with hot tap water, flush with distilled water..

LET IT DRY!!! Like a week. Put it over your heat register or by a window.

Re-assemble and cross your fingers. Other than that keyboards can be had for cheap on ebay.

Good luck.

Its an older dell E1505 - and I could take the keyboard out - but I need some instructions. Is there a diagram or something?

The hinges on it are all shot to hell. I thought maybe trying to lube them or look to see if I could help them along - but when I tackled it, there were parts that looked like they should pop off - but they would not.

Power off and remove battery.  Take HD and DVD out.  Rinse with distilled water and let drain vertically.  A small squirt wash bottle is good.  Let dry slowly.

As long as ALL the juice is washed out, it will be good to go.  All electronics is WASHED after final assembly.  But keep it away from speakers...

The keyboard should be easy to pull, just turn it over and remove the screws with a K next to them.  Rinse this as above.  You can speed drying with a final ethanol rinse, Everclear would be a good choice but denatured ethanol if Everclear isn't available.

BTDT.

All of Dell's tech manuals are on their website. Try that.

easy, tilt the screen back as far as possible

then look at the panel between the top of the keyboard and the hinges for the screen, take it off.

there will be little open slots to put a screwdriver in and pry the plastic up, get it started and then use your fingers to pry the panel off. you may feel like you are going to break it, just go slow and start at one end and move your way across.

there may be a cable connecting that panel to the motherboard, detach it and set the panel aside.

unscrew the screws holding down the keyboard, then the keyboard should lift out, may require a bit of force to get past the little plastic retainers that keep it in place,  just lift up on the back side and slide it toward the screen.  don't pull too hard, there is a ribbon cable underneath that you have to unplug, you don't want to damage it.

thats it keyboard is out.  it should be safe to run under the faucet if you want, just don't put it back in unless you are certain that it is completely dry. also you can inspect your motherboard for juice, use rubbing alcohol to clean it.
