ST. LOUIS (AP) — A burglary suspect is hospitalized in critical condition after being shot by a St. Louis homeowner.

KSDK-TV reports the shooting happened at 4:10 a.m. when the homeowner awakened and heard someone in his garage. The homeowner saw the suspect and shot him in the chest.

Police say the homeowner's gun was registered and he had all the correct permits. So far, the name of the suspect has not been released.

Season opens right at break ins and ends when he gets carted off. I prefer 5.56mm in the house, 7.62 just makes too much of a mess.

I wondered that too.  The article makes no mention of the burgler's permits.  I'll email the reporter to ask.  ETA: Gave up, they're even unnamed on the original station's site.
