Starter homes available for 500 bucks. Group buy anyone? For about $100,000 you could buy an entire section of town, build a wall and turn it into ARFcom land. |

Arf should pitch in for a house they'd be forced to defend sooner or later.
And then post the pics, of course. |

I wouldn't seriously want to live in Detroit but in theory a rugged individual with good home fortification skills could live on the cheap and make it work. A pack of said rugged individuals could probably occupy and hold a neighborhood fairly easily. Crackheads and squatters aren't known for their sophisticated weaponry and superior offensive tactics. |

Screw the group buy.
Just buy a whole neighborhood and bulldoze everything to lower the property tax value to where you can just sit on it. |

http://www.kevinbauman.com/100abandonedhouses/ Is just one example.
There are dozens of sites that have hundreds of photos of abandon schools, libraries, police stations, churches, colleges, etc, all over the city and outlying counties. I spent the better part of a weekend a month ago just looking at them. Examples were the above mentioned buildings abandoned intact. Nobody bothered to move out, they just closed the doors and left. One notable one was a police station that still had a full property room that was slowly being looted, with several weapons scattered on the floor. It was amazing, in total. |

I lived in Detroit for 20 years and still have family down there.
It is possible to do the group buy thing. It would not be as fun as sounds. The cops don't bother good citizens BUT a big problem would be the courts and prosecutor. A good self defense shoot would be a big problem. You would have to have people watching the "community" 24/7. Vehicles would be a huge target for thieves. It seemed that my family had a car stolen or broken into at least a year. I would suggest no women or children unless the women were hard core gun bunnies. Buying food and ammo wouldn't be the problem (if the property was guarded against thieves while you shopped). Detroit doesn't have a lot of shopping areas but the suburbs are close and you can easily buy there. Good luck trying to find workers to come and fix your house. They don't want to come to the 'hood. Ammo is easy Michigan is a Mecca for deer hunting and CCW laws are not bad. RE: Plane There is small airport within the city at 6 and gratiot. Fortifying a home We have the fire power. Get ghetto gates (heavy metal doors) Bars on windows 2 or more attack dogs (I suggest Rotts but pitbulls are cheap and available in the D) arfcomm neighbors on 24/7 security RE: Elections not likely political corruption in Detroit is DEEP. |

Buy the property cheap.
Get together with all of the other investors and file a class action lawsuit against the apprasial district. People file suit over property valuations all the time. The government doesn't have a leg to stand on if those are the highest price an a property will go for at auction. |

I've never filed suit but I've gone down to City Hall twice in the past three years to contest the valuation of my house. Both times they lowered the valuation by 5%-10%. I'm saving about $800 per year now and it's locked in forever thanks to the Headlee Amendment. |
