(circa late 1999) Hindsight is 20/20, and knowing then what I know now, I would have put all the money I spent on new guns into more ammunition. I wish I'd filled my garage with that Hirtenberger 7.62x51 and South African 5.56. |

I ordered it, put it on my Visa- and 2 of the guys backed out, 1 flaked (I didn't know him well), the other got canned and had to shore up his finances (tough time for poor saving Pharm Reps). Luckily, I thought at the time, the fourth guy agreed to split the order. So I ended up with twice what I wanted - or so I thought. Few years back Mr. Flaker got a hold of me and asked if I had any left - he was incensed when I told him 50 cent per round.  Hell I had to cover storage, inflation and retroactive hernia surgery from 4 or 5 moves.
IIRC at one time you could buy Mk 262 from Fulton Armory for less than XM193 now - cant find my receipts, but pretty sure thats right, or least close. I dont even want to think about the .50 cal.deal

I hate to even think about all the cases of 9mm CCI Blazer I shot for $3.99/ box in the late 90's. It was so cheap, it wasn't worth the time to reload it. Wolf 7.62x39 was around $79/ K, and the .223 was around $90/K FTF at Knob Creek. At the time, I had no interest in steel cased .223, with the prices of South African. Winchester Q3131A or Federal XM193 were approximately $179/K all day long locally, and even by the box it was only $3.99/20. |

I remember buying tons of 308 @ 90-110 K. Shot a ton and stored even more. I knew it would never get any cheaper. I wish I would have seen the future on 223. I have 91 rounds

I was paying $144.00 per thousand rounds of Winchester Q3131A .223 at Bass Pro Shops. I took liberal advantage of those sales. I still have stacks of it.
I still have cheap South African battlepacks too.

I distinctly remember ordering 1000rds of XM193 - any time I wanted - for $175 delivered to my doorstep. No backorder, no hunting around for a good deal, no bullshit. All day long, for $175 or less. It was like this for something like two years.

God, I hope you're right.
I hate to put on the tin foil hat, but clearly the government is purchasing the majority of the ammo right now. When the distributors I deal with hardly get any ammo at all anymore, it's getting intercepted somewhere. The only party big enough to do that is the .gov. |

Metals (raw materials) are much higher now, Labor is higher now (inflation), and every other cost of doing business. The dollar is dramatically weaker on the foreign market. Until Russian companies are willing to sell us newly manufactured .223 for less than $100 a case, (which is doubtful) we won't see those prices again. Lest we forget, the whole South African ammunition scandal was right out of "Lord of War". (Bribery and sold at scrap metal prices and it made it to the US intact) |

I took my daughter out to the range for the first time this spring, She ran over 800 rds through my 10/22 that day. She slowed down the next 2 times getting her accuracy going
I went to replace the ammo a few weeks later and  holy crap!!!!!! I used to spend $3-4 on mini mags and $5 on bulk thunderbolts.
The old man pissed himself when I told him i spent $180 on a crate of 7.62 last year |

Remember the 40-rnd WWB Value-Packs of 223 for $7.73 not all that long ago? I heard it was going bye-bye and bought out every Wal-Mart around here in two days. Even though I've still have over 2000 of it, I wish I had bought the one box that the last guy dropped that busted open and spilled all over the floor. Those Wal-Mart guys were always dropping the ammo boxes!
I've also got receipts of XM-193 and Q3131 for $189 per 1K from early 2006. ETA: Still have the ammo too!!!

I was paying $9.99 a brick for Wildcat and $5.99 for PMC Sidewinder (yeah, it is crap but it went bang). My best buys were $100/1000 for 7.62X51 Port from Sportsmans Guide and .223 55gr FMJBT for $2.99 a box of 20 from Natchez. I am glad I bought a bunch of both of them.

The reason ammo costs so much is because metal prices are way up. Components cost 2-3x what they used to. I mean maybe $400/1000 for XM193 has a little "fluff" in it, but you won't ever see $150/1000 again unless the US dollar regains some strength.
I remember buying 1000 Winchester .224" 55 grain bullets for $30/1000 all day long in bulk from Midway. Now they cost 3x that. Primers are double what they were 10 years ago (if you can find them). Powder is still close to as cheap as it was, but only if you buy it in bulk and online. |

In 2001-2002, The best deal by far was Southern Ammo's Israeli surplus .223, or .308 $100 per 1000, including the 50 cal can it was shipped in.
It was $100 shipped for a while, then they started charging an extra $12 for shipping, the bastards. Wolf and other Russian ammo was .223 and 5.45 and 9mm was $79-$99 all day long, everywhere. .45 and 308 was not much more. Walmart WB 9mm was ten cents a round until about two years ago. We will see those prices again soon, (plus maybe 20% inflation.) I have given up on expecting people to exercise common sense or self control, but the simple fact is that the real whorders have gotten their fill, and a lot of them are running out of credit. The Gun Culture is prone to panic and prone to believe in conspiracies and other irrational assumptions. The Ammo industry has exploited it beautifully, but bubbles cannot last forever. |

Now that I could afford to do some shooting at the old prices....I cant afford it now either.
