The launch date for Windows 7 has arrived. Who is upgrading today? How has it gone for you?
I didn't "upgrade", I have a fresh installation of W7. Been running it for a couple months. It is really top notch. Especially considering its a MS OS.
It should be here in a week or so....I ordered late last night, had to wait on hold for an hour and 8 minutes.
I got the email last night that my 30 dollar copy of home premium is ready.
I'll probably install it tonight or this weekend. |

I'm still waiting on Microsoft to get mine here. I'm hoping it still comes this week. I had to set up many W7 machines last night for work.
win 7 ultimate 64 for me...but i've had it a looooong time. however, i did just get the full version installed only a few weeks ago
I pre-ordered the retail version of Seven Home Premium from Amazon. I should be over to the package receiving station today to pick it up and install it tonight! Edit: you industry insiders who got yours for cheap suck. I had to pay $199 for mine. |

I started downloading mine this morning and will put it on an extra HD probably this evening. Funny thing is I've had more problems with the RC/Evaluation than Ive had with vista. Though that's probably due to drivers. |
Got 7 Pro running on my laptop right now, and all of my admin tools work! More than I can say for Vista. Its considerably faster than Vista as well.

Got a copy of Windows 7 Pro for $19 (had to sign up as a member of a club that had access to the MS developer network and you could download it with a valid CD key) in September.
Its really nice, especially on a fast 4Ghz i7 system. Though if I had to pay retail for it, I'd still be using XP. |
My copies shipped from Newegg yesterday, UPS is bringing them today. I will not be upgrading today I'll probably wait untill my RC's are about to expire, I don't feel like doing any fresh installs at the moment.
I have a pre-order copy on the way from Amazon.
Unfortunately I have no idea when I will be able to fit in the time to do the install. |

What's the difference between the 32 and 64 bit versions - and is the premium or ultimate versions worth the $$$ over the home version of 7?
I've been running it on three laptops (1 32 bit & 2 64 bit) for the past 4 months or so. I'm completely tickled with it. Mostly because I didn't have to learn anything, but also because they have all three ran flawlessly since. No reboots, no glitches, no confusion. Perfect.
I now forgive MS for selling me a copy of vista. |
i'm just shocked at win7's driver compatablities.
On my home system I installed the RC of ultimate and I needed a few drivers for some of my hardware. My sound is working with an XP/vista driver my video a vista driver and my ancient linksys wusb11 adapter with a 6 year old win xp driver. i remember people back in the day crashing XP with win2k drivers. |
I upgraded 6 weeks ago to Win7 RTM Professional x64 and love it!
Would never go back to XP |
So whats the deal? If I bought a computer with Vista, I get a free upgrade? Discount? Whats the lo-down here?
If you purchased it June 24/09-January 31st 2010 you can get a free upgrade to windows 7 if I remember correctly.
got my $30 string of numbers and letters in my e-mail and typed them in to activate my already installed copy.

I upgraded my Vista laptop to it about 3 months ago. So far love it.
using it right now on my work machine.. basically vista with XP functionality
I just ran the W7 upgrade advisor on my current XP Pro system. It says that I'll have to run a custom install of W7 32-bit. I thought that I could run 32 or 64 bit (user preference) on this machine. is it dependant on the motherboard setup?
I'm running a Dell XPS 710 gaming PC for work cause my stuff is heavy on the graphics. The system is about 3 or 4 years old. Update: OK - I didn't scroll down far enough... Apparently, I can install a custom install of 64-bit W7 on my machine. The only bad thing is that my $800 graphics card isn't compatible with W7 Aero |
if you want a really good unbiased opinion of 7 ask subnet.
I love it myself and have had it installed for a while now on my work PC. Better yet here you go |
If you are happy with Vista there is little reason to run out and switch to 7 right away. I work on PC's for a living. Vista is a great and now very stable OS. Compatibility between the 2 is quite incredible with Windows 7 right out of the starting gate with the general public. YMMV
Just trying to help people out and not start any huge arguments. |
One thing I dislike is the new quicklaunch/taskbar. I much prefer the vista/XP one.
Quoted: I've been running it for about a month, I love it. Same here. My company released the final corporate version to us about a month ago - I've loaded it on 3 systems and haven't had an issue with any of them. Only downside is that if you run XP, it's not an "upgrade" It's a fresh install. But, I've found most all of the driver software for different components gets installed with the OS which is quite nice. I've only had issue with one older notebook that an updated sound driver hasn't been released yet, although that should be fixed here shortly now that the OS has been released to the public. |
I just processed my free upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium 64 on the Gateway site, waiting on shipping confirmation via email.
I hope it is better than Vista. |
Quoted: My school gave me a free copy. I installed it on 2 computers. I needed an extra one to activate on the second computer.Quoted: got my $30 string of numbers and letters in my e-mail and typed them in to activate my already installed copy. Are they doing this for all of us who used the beta? If you were a student and ordered before today you could have gotten a copy for $30. Now it's too late. |

Got Pro x64 for free ( legitimately ) about 3 weeks ago. Runs fine, but it's got its quirks...
Pros: -Install was painless. It doesn't stop 8 times during setup and wait for user input so you don't have to sit there and wait. Start, walk away, and come back later when it's done. -It was free... -The UI looks nice. -My machine did not catch fire and burn my house down. Cons: -My Netgear wireless card won't work despite running fine on Vista. I had to move my router into my office and use the NIC on the mobo. Netgear blows. I'm pretty sure I'll never buy from them again... -It does NOT boot/run noticeably faster than my Vista copy did. -There are enough changes to the UI that my click-without-reading habits are all f'd up. Like anything new it will take some time to adjust. -Home networking with XP/Vista PCs is not as straightforward as it should be. The only real reason I upgraded was my Vista copy was Home Premium and I wanted remote desktop... Otherwise I would have left well enough alone. |

I chuckled at the irony of someone with a username of kill -9 starting a Windows thread...
Been running 7 Ultimate x64 on my home PC for a couple of months with 0 issues. Have 7 Home Premium x64 on my g/f's laptop for about a month now with 0 issues. Installed 7 Home Premium 32bit on my Dell Mini 9 the other day - runs it without a hitch so far.
i'll wait till SP1 comes out, even when the reviews say it's awesome and blah blah blah.
Going to later today , I assume that i can't upgrade from a 7100 RC trial version?
For a trial version , W7 is NICEEEEEEEEE, Very stable. |
