I need some A/C parts for my Jeep, you think they would mind if I paid a visit with a small toolbox ?
|
|
Most of those are newer and nicer than my daily driver.
ETA: is there a list of locations with those cars available? I'm sure there are plenty of usable parts on them. |
|
Yeah those couldn't be better used as cars for meals on wheels or shelters or even welfare folks. Idiots.
|
|
That idiot Obama is doing to the economy what that press does to those vehicles.
|
|
It would seem like if you stripped them and sold the parts on used parts market, crushed only the empty chassis, you could make much more money.

those are some decent jeeps
dumbshits could have sold them for more than $4500 easy |
|
Damn, I'd like to have one of those Grand Cherokees. Those "clunkers" are nicer than what I drive. Your gov't at work.
|
|
We did 234 clunker deals. I was appointed the Clunker Czar.
Lots of work. Lots of Frustration. Last one approved for payment by the .GOV on Thursday of last week. |
|
I drive a `95 honda civic with 200k miles. I would gladly have paid cash of $2250 for the .gov's $4500 give-away.
This is infuriating. |

I thought the libs were all about Reduce/Reuse/Recycle...Oh wait, unless it's for Evil SUVs....

remember this thread the next time hear one of those commercials on the radio encouraging you to donate your vehicle.
|
|
Every single one of those is in better condition (and much newer) than any of my vehicles.

Just contact your local junk yard. These clunkers are everywhere. This yard is in Podunk NH, and they had 800. Ask around, and start bargaining, 'cause they all gotta go in 180 days. |

Alot of those look better than mine, which I'm still driving! (250,000 miles & still going strong)

They ought to just pull the trashed motors and sell the rest as a roller/parts wagon.
I need to find a place like that near me though - there's quite a few S-10/Blazer parts I'd like to get a hold of. A ZR-2 roller would be perfect. |

Those are in much much much better shape than my 14 year old beat to hell Toyota Corolla.

Have you ever put a dead hooker in the trunk of a car and then had it crushed?

NPR had a recent story on the CforC fallout. Choice quote: LANGFITT: But she doesn't think it was so good for the Detroit car companies it was designed to help. Darvish says most of her customers traded in American clunkers for foreign cars. She says that will come back to haunt Detroit.
Ms. DARVISH: When these customers get back into the trade cycle again, they're not going to go back to a Detroit domestic vehicle. Take Toyota, for example. I mean, their loyalty is almost 80 percent. So we know that at least 80 percent of those customers will end up staying in a Toyota product. LANGFITT: So do you think Cash for Clunkers actually helped General Motors and Chrysler? Ms. DARVISH: Oh, absolutely not. |

So how is this helping the environment, or the they economy, again?

I fucking hated this program with every fiber of my being.
But as a junkyard scrounger, it has been a bounty for me. My toyota 4x4 now has a set of Lexus seats in it (comfy), brake upgrades and a bunch of other misc stuff. If they hadn't roached the motors, I would be elbow deep in the process of shoehorning a lexus V8 in my truck too. The girlfriends Lexus is pretty much getting the entire interior replaced with newer, unripped leather seats out of the many clunkers. But seeing late model BMWs and Benzes (and a corvette) and row after row of SUVs that are nicer then what I daily drive just makes me want to scream. There are at least 30 cars in the local yard that I would have paid way more then $4,500 for. No one has been able to answer me as to if the engines are rebuildable. Thought about tearing into one to see if it just the bearings that are roached or if all the oil passages are now filled with glass. The yard said they would sell me one if I wanted to try.. As cheap as a lot of the parts are being sold (CFC parts are 1/2 price), I have been thinking about pulling parts and reselling them, but I have no idea what would move in today's market. |

Good post OP...
It reminds me of a FDR & New Deal story I read, where they wanted to support pork prices. Their opinion was that the best way to stop freefalling prices was to reduce the supply. Sounds good, but to reduce the supply they decided to slaughter A LOT of pigs, bury them and pay the farmers whatever. So, in the middle of a depression where people were often legitimately hungry (unlike today), they paid good tax money to destroy the "excessive" pigs at a time when the population could have enjoyed lower prices. |

Ya gotta remember, teh .gov invented teh rulz Got to watch a guy buy an entire Tacoma the other day except for the engine and firewall. Took all the sheetmetal (they sawzalled the roof and floorpan off), interior, wiring and drivetrain except for the long block. I think there was a fair amount of shenanigans going on with the program. The car I pulled my seats out of was freshly detailed and had dealer "used car" paperwork in it. Have some suspicion that when people were coming in with a car the dealer could sell on their used lot (rather then wholesaling it) for more then $4,500, they would substitute a car off the used lot or out of the back lot (cars waiting to go to the wholesalers). Just for kicks, I looked up the values on some of the clunkers. One of the BMWs that was killed had a wholesale value of $16,000, a benz that was worth $15,500 and the vette was worth ~$9,000. People (and the government) are fucking stupid. |

lot of nice looking grand cherokees there.
wouldn't mind getting one with the 5.2 to tool around in |

It's infuriating what this administration is doing to our country. Where is it going to stop?

Look at all that created wealth. When I get home I'm going to put $20 in my left pocket, take it out, put it in my right pocket and see how much money I have.
