Boy killed while playing with gun

Police today were characterizing as accidental the shooting death of a 9-year-old boy Monday night, apparently as he played with a loaded gun.

Chicago Police Officer Thomas Donegan said Ramon Favela, of the 2400 block of West Taylor Street, was killed in the bedroom he shared with his 14-year-old brother when the handgun, which the older boy had found in an alley and hidden in their room, discharged.

Police said the teenager was attempting to take the gun away from his younger brother about 9:15 p.m., when the weapon went off, striking and fatally injuring the 9-year-old.

The boy was transported to Cook County Hospital and was pronounced dead at 9:41 p.m., a spokeswoman for the county medical examiner's office said. The precise cause of death had yet to be determined, she said.

Police found the gun had not been registered with the city and had not been used in any crimes, Donegan said. Authorities said they had not determined what kind of handgun it was. Investigators were interviewing family members.

It was the second fatal accident in a week involving a youth and a handgun in Chicago.

Fourteen-year-old Dwayne Jones, of the 5000 block of West Erie Street, died at a friend's house in the 1700 block of North Melvina Avenue Friday, after his friends tried to wrest a gun from him, police said. The Cook County state's attorney's office classified the incident as an accident and filed no charges.

And to think, the Liberals ASSURED us that these things wouldn't happen, once we had "common sense" gun laws in place, JUST LIKE the ones Chicago has.

Does anyone else feel as betrayed as I do?? [rolleyes]

Gee guys, I'm not a pathologist, but I'm pretty sure he died of a gunshot wound.

I feel really sad that this kind of circumstances happen again, but can assure you that this won't be the last as long as people keep their children away from guns. See no evil, hear no evil attitude. In opposite, we should teach children what guns can do and be treated with care and respect.  The simple 4 important rules of handling firearms could do better than gunlocks and regulations.

Now how in hell do they know the weapon was never used in a crime.  Is there some other law that requires the criminal to report and record the serial numbers of weapons when used in the commission of a felony?

Hey, now!  Give the kid a break.

Even cops don't know they can't pull the trigger w/out having the gun go off.

What's your professional opinion of our nationally famous (some might say glory-hound) forensic pathologist Cyril Wecht from right here in Pittsburgh?

Seems like mounting evidence that gun-registration/bans just don't work!

It also seems like growing evidence that we need to teach GUN SAFETY to all kids in school!

We got driver's ed and sex ed because... well, they're going to encounter cars and sex in the real world - why not teach about gun safety too!
It's for the children.

Reminds me of a kid that was a grade below me in high school.  When he was in 10th grade he was showing his buddy, who also went to my school, his new hunting rifle.  Somehow, some way, the LOADED rifle was pointed at said buddy's head and the owner of the rifle accidently pulled the trigger.  The kid has to live with that for the rest of his life, pretty bad hand to have dealt at such a young age.  Too many parents are allowing their children to be around guns without at least some basic firearms safety training.  That death lies solely on the parents head.

Hmmm.  They can determine all this information but not "what kind of handgun it was"?
Wonderful. How long would it take the newest, least experienced mamber of this board to determine "what kind" of handgun it is?

Sheesh.  Bureaucracy.

Guns don't kill people, People kill people.  It all boils down to the fact parents are too wrapped up in their own lil world to know what the heck is going on.  If parents watched their kids like the did back in the 60's and 70's we wouldn't have ½ the problems we do now.  If it was the gun's fault it would be like saying my computer downloaded the porn on its own for its own pleasure.  NOT!!!

This gun is not id'd yet, but they know it wasn't used in a crime.  Wow, thats profound police work.  If they hadn't id'd it, most likely its missing the serial #, thus the probability of it having been used in a crime is pretty damn high.

Don't you love the journalism of today?  You gotta wonder who is less intelligent, the journalists who influence the public through sloppy journalism, or the politicians who enact more laws after John Moron Public cries about gun deaths they read in the paper because of the slant that these journalists give to their articles.

That gun was probably planted by an anti-gunner in the hopes that something like this would happen, thereby creating yet another 'reason' why guns should be totally banned.

That's not all that far-fetched, unfortunately.
I'm quite sure that there are some rabid anti-gunners who would commit murder (with a gun) if it guaranteed that guns would be totally banned and confiscated in door-to-door searches.
