I know you have a first aid kit in your BOB, but do you also have a surgical kit?  In reality knowing how to properly clean and stitch cuts would come in handy.  Where would the best place to get a kit like that and the information on how to use them. Obviously without going to med school. =)

Sorry, but if the SHTF and I found out I was'nt
rambo the hard way,I would rather bleed out or
die of an infection than to have some "Doctor"
who used to be a car mechanic or whatever
say,"drink this beer and bite down on this
leather strap'cause this might hurt."Having
gutted many deer I would'nt want to try to fix
that mess without serious,dedicated schooling.
Remember, you might not feel it but the person
you're carving on does![:D]

If the SHTF on a major scale limiting all
medical help,then mortality rates rise,simple
infections like bronchitis can kill let alone
a major wound.Thats life, but it still sucks to
think about dying from a something  like a bite
from a rabid animal,or a black widow,or rattlesnake.
Thats the problem with SHTF scenarios, they might
be fun for some to fantasize about, but in
reality they are what nightmares are made of.I
am looking at going to med-school after the army
and during H.S. I volunteered at my local hospi-
tal.I worked in the E.R. "admitting area" on
occasion and some of those people would'nt of
made it without(simple,yet skilled) medical
care,heck with
all my problems  I had as a baby I would probaly be dead.

Sorry to go OT.to answer your question, yes I
would carry a med kit,but only with the hopes that one with the proper training could use it.
My perfect SHFT team would include a trauma
surgeon and a Delta operator,if they are'nt on
hand I would settle for a Army SF medic and a
mean lawyer![:D]

I could very well be talking about something
I have no clue on but I thought a GOOD kit would
run at least $300.The two things I would'nt
skimp on for a BOB would be a gas mask(if you
think you would require one)ALL medical supplies
Oh yea,and the pack itself. [:)]

This is just the surgical part.  Hemostats, tweezers, scissors, scalpel, sutures, etc.  I thought the question was about adding to a first aide kit.

www.Galls.com Has great med gear.

I just completed my first responder training for the police academy. As others have said in this post, basically if you are not a surgeon you don't need a surgical kit. Even the best medics only prolong death if they cannot airlift or transport you to a hospital. The only things we can worry about is Airway/Breathing/Circulation. You can open an airway, breath for them with a pocket mask or BVM, and you can perform CPR if they have went into cardiac arrest.
Other than general first aid for cuts, burns, etc. all you can do is try and keep someone alive until help can reach you.

And remember all bleeding eventually stops....just try to stop IT before it stops itself!!!!
