Say hello to my little friend:
Six rounds from a .22 cal revolver, no dice, still tried to strike. The shovel is king. Once again, my mini-dauschunds found it started barking. I will never forget the sound of a Rattlesnake pissed at me, kinda makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck. |

What distance were you shooting from? Because I wouldn't want to get hit with snakeshot.

Interesting, I have a box of .22 snake shot I found at my fathers house.
It didn't even hurt the snake? Did you get well aimed shots off? |

Did you hit the snake? Have you "patterned" the gun you are using the shotshells in?
Granted .22 shotshells are not exactly earth shaking but out of an old bolt action 22 I routinely ventilate the rattlers that get to close to my house. But you do have to be within about 6 feet or so to be effective depending on barrel length. |

I killed several water moccasins with rat shot this year. Granted most were shot at a distance of <2'

.22 RF with #12 shot is pretty much worthless. Shoot one at a target sometime. Hand loaded #8 or #7 1/2 shot works well, but the rifling in revolver hoses things up and spreads the shot more than I want to see.

The end of the rifle barrel usually ends up about 3 feet from the snake....that puts me about 5 feet away. Well beyond the striking distance of rattlesnakes. Shotguns work fine.....but 22 shot shells are cheap, for me at least they work and I don't have to go scrounging around looking for hearing pro etc. The single shot rifle stays out with a box of shotshells next to it....not in a safe. See a snake too close.... 30 seconds later it's all over but the shouting. |

I used to work for an old man that grew up on a ranch in the Dakotas. He said he used to shoot rattle snakes in the head all the time. He said they were easy to hit in the head because if you used low velocity .22 and aimed for their head from the right distance they would strike at the bullet.

The problem with shot in a rifle or pistol is the rifling. It slows the shot and makes it useless. In fact, Marlin at one time made a .22 WMR smoothbore rifle.

Try the CCI .45 shotshell loads. I carry them in a seperate mag from my defense loads in my Para. I usually stick about 3 in the mag after I first load the rest of the mag, ten additional, with lead SWCs. I use them for dogs, snakes or anything else, them I still have the SWCs if I need to kill the dog or other animal, or human. I keep another mag in my pocket with Guardian Gold. I carry this every time I go outdoors for anything, as we have a lot of snakes, wild animals, and stray dogs.

I killed a 43" copperhead last Saturday after he bit two of my Labs. Shot with a 22 LR at 3 inches from the back of his head to the muzzle! He never sensed I was there - was poised to strike another dog and never so much as moved a muscle. Weighed over 8 lbs.
One lab with a 'top of the nose bite' is OK; the other has an inch and a half rotting sore on his lower right jaw after going into shock and spending a couple of days at the hospital. When it absolutely has to die - "splatter it brains" |

Ruger 357 with snake shot is the answer. The husband unit just dispatched 1 2 weeks ago sitting 4 feet from our cabin front door and 3 feet from my little min pin. Also took out a cotton mouth about 15 yards. SP101 with 3 inch barrel. Time for something else to evolve and take their place. I hate those damn things.

I emptied a revolver loaded with .22 shotshells into a possum from 3 ft. away. That just pissed it off. I don't believe even one of the pellets got through its fur. |

I've killed rats in the house with 22 birdshot out of a revolver.
Worked pretty good, got nice and close and all the shot stayed in the rat(s). Woke the wife up one night shooting one behind the book case in the living room after working swing-shift.
One of our damn cats was bringing them in through the dog door and letting them go in the house. That said they have very limited utility. On another high note, a friend killed himself with a contact wound to the noggin with a .38 birdshot round. Emory |
