Hello,

I need extended ethernet cables.  Does it matter if I use Cat5 or cat6 cables?

Thanks

I think you could use Cat5, Cat5e or Cat6.

IT guy here ... for home use it doesn't matter you aren't going to top out the bandwidth capacity ... go with what's cheaper/on sale.

Cat6 is just harder on crosstalk and signal noise.

It's also rated for performance up to 250MHz whereas Cat5/5e is 100MHz.

what speed network?

What is the speed of your port on your computer and the speed on your switch/router port?  If you have a 1000 Mbit ports and want the most speed you will need CAT 6, if you don't care or you only have 100Mbit ports then CAT 5 is fine.

Just get a Cat5 (or Cat5e if that's all you can find) and be done with it.

5e is good for gigabit....cat 6 is supposedly "better" but not sure what it will gain you- I did my house with 6, not cause i know better...
got to www.monoprice.com and order them

Your network probably will never even run at 100 mps and your internet is probably less than 6 mps so get what ever is cheaper. cat5 has worked for years. I have 4 runs of fiber optic in each room of my house and don't even bother to use it. I just use one of the 2 cat 5 home runs I have in each room.

For home use, either will do fine.

Cat5e because I bought it in bulk.  The house is wired for Gigabit.  You need really big files to max out the transfer speed though.

Keep in mind you should limit the length of twisted pair Ethernet cable to 100 meters.  Not quite sure what you mean by "extended" Ethernet cables?

And I've driven over the speed limit.  Your point?

What all the other IT guys said, and if you're thinking about going to a big box store to buy cables, just do me a favor, lean forward and choke yourself.

Cat 6 will not help you with that.....just go fiber and skip the copper BS

I am just about to spec out 10GB to the desktop here at work......already have 10GB and the servers.....
