It's nice to see something explode when you pull a trigger.
Try taking him clay shooting, do you have a 12 gauge? If not I'll let you borrow one of mine for the sake of getting a youngster into it (I see that you're in Ca  ).Target shooting is fun for us guys that are already bit, but tracking and watching a clay blow apart is a thrill, might encourage him a little. Birdshot is easy enough on the shoulder for an 11 year old. |

I started shooting at 5.
But dad kept the stuff interesting by taking us hunting. Dove hunting at 8 and deer at about 9. Then the black guns. Not PC anymore but many beer bottles died at our shooting range. Try some skeet? |

I always bring the black guns - always.
I do have a 12 & a 410 that he'd probably like more that the 28" barreled 12. but... he did just say he likes the more "mature" classmate with big boobs, so maybe I can cut him some slack. 
I do agree on reactive targets, which is why myself & grandpa both got the metal spinner targets - but he hasn't wanted to go since March this year. |

If you can afford it, try getting something bigger than a .17. Go out and buy the boy a used .30-30. Then see if that intrigues him.
