If you could only put $1K into it...1911 or BHP?
That means $1 has to include the pistol plus any gunsmithing/modifications. Which one would get you the best bang for the buck? BHP can be 9mm or 40 S&W. Nostalgia is not a consideration. Looking for accuracy and dependability in the real world, not the safe.

Do you have any 1911's? If not, I'd get a Colt Series 70, and call it done. Maybe get some sights and grips.
If you do have a 1911 already, I'd go with the BHP. Like the Government Model, a BHP doesn't really need much. I recommend some nice grips by Craig Spegel, or Hakan Pek. |

If you like the feel of the 1911, the BHP has an easier recoil for quicker follow up shots. Also, a 15 rounds magazine beats a 7 rounds one any day of the week. Just get rid of the stupid magazine safety on the BHP and you'll be set. I've also heard of a few versions floating around that were double action.

Mine was 750$. Lightly used. Came with night sights, new grips, hammer, trigger job, and a bunch of mags. It's been 100% so far. I was actually looking for a 1911 when I found it, but I've never seen a better deal on one. |

I bought this Springfield 1911 for $450:
I spent another $400 did the work myself and turned it into this, it's a wonderful pistol and runs perfectly: total cost $850. 
I just bought a kimber Pro Crimson Carrry 2 (which includes a Crimson Trace laser pointer) for $960. 
While I really enjoyed building up my Springfield, after $850 it is no better than the $960 Kimber and doesn't have a laser..... ETA: I'm not saying that a well rebuilt 1911 isn't good, I really like the one I did, I'm just saying that these days for just a bit more money you can get a good one right out of the box complete with goodies. |

Buy a standard Hi Power, Browning marked. (Like what you'll see in gun stores, etc.)
Night sights are all it really needs. Grip panels and a larger safety if you dislike the factory options. You don't need to blow a lot on a Hi Power to get a reliable, accurate one. |

I'd buy a FeG HP clone and a decent 1911.
Detail and polish all parts myself, swap in decent sights. Do the work myself. Replace anything that didn't work, which shouldn't be much. Remove mag safety on the HP. I bet I could bring it in under a grand. |

I've owned several of both. I have always considered the HP a more reliable "out of the box" pistol. You could buy a new Colt Series 70, and have a pretty decent 1911, I think. Depends on whether you want to have a bunch of mods done to your pistol. I prefer mine close to stock, so I'd prolly go with the HP because of the reliability factor.

well, I just got a BHP and an extra slide assy. and 7 mags for 500 and sold the slide assy for 265 shipped.so, basically I got a BHP for 250
. I've already replaced almost all the springs, trigger pin and stocks. It's going off for Novak Low Pro sights and a park job. That's only gonna run me 200. So I guess I can get a lot more for 500$ I wonder what I should do. Hmmmm

ETA Mag disconect is already gone. It already has a Sear and Slide Sear and hammer installed in it. also have a Para Ord SSP 1911. I wanna ditch it and get a TRP when funds permit. |

I am a huge Hi Power fan, but.....1911 all the way. Reconnect is much faster, and can handle hotter ammo.

I paid less than $700 for my 1911 Loaded brand new, and it has been completely fault free, except for some truncated-cone ammo and one crappy aftermarket magazine. Maybe your case was crap ammo or crap magazines? |

I wouldn't buy anything that needed smithing or modifications out of the box. that is stupid.
Buy a weapon that works out of the box and use the remaining money on ammo and go shoot the damn thing. My personal perference is the 92FS. I took mine out of the box and didn't have to do anything to it. I shoot pretty good with it after some practice. |
