I think this makes a pretty strong argument for that conclusion.  Sorry,  can't imbed.

Yes, they did rip him off.

No, it can't be adequately proved that it's intentional and malicious.

But nobody in the mainstream cares about either of those two groups.

Also, Satch is better.

Didn't Coldplay win a best song grammy for that song?   That's pretty mainstream.

Agreed Satch is better.

Using the same chord progression doesn't qualify as "ripping off" another artist.

Fuck Coldplay. How many albums do they have? Four? Hmm, Satriani has 15... Has Coldplay tought Kirk Hammett how to play guitar? Has Coldplay played with the Rolling Stones or Deep Purple?

I dont care if OldGay did rip him off, Satch is in my top five artists of all time and will forever be greater at everything in life. Period.

Holy shit, listen to that mashup! They should go out and make an album with Joe and shake hands. That sounds great, and you've got to say that they definitely took what they heard and made it their own. To an outside (non musical) person there is little discernible similarity between the songs besides one little part of the hook, but when you really listen to both songs, wow, did they ever copy it.

Amazing how they can produce two different pieces entirely.

Are any of you Satriani fans familiar with a guy named Andy Timmons?

He tours with Satch occasionally.

My job has brought me in contact with him for the past few weeks, what a nice guy and an awesome musician

That chord progression is not new and has been used by many more than just Satrianni and Coldplay. That said I distinctly prefer Coldplay's version.

Yes. They did.
