Well time has final come. I have to retire the series 70 gov. model 1911 a1 from daliy carry.
The value has climbed to a level that, with the orginal box and papers I have to make her a safe queen. She has a soft place next to my first duty carry a Trooper MKIII, she has about 85% finish from carry from the years since the 80's. She is resting now to be cared for as a sweet old girl she is. Never failed when needed,abused but cared for, One part that failed over the years was the safety lever. My new baby is a Rock Island Basic model, but all springs changed out, and time spent on the fit/finish of the moving parts. She funtions very well with every ammo including wolf. |

It's rather comical that you are retiring an 85% series 70 when many guys here are daily carrying guns worth twice as much.

RIA's aren't as bad as most people think. I would trust my life to one. Having said that, if I could carry a 1911, itd be my Springer

I have used to Rock Island as a starting point, notice I replaced every spring, and spent time on fit and function. This has not been a short term project. The Rock island has been a base for my personal build. Many years with the 1911 frame, have given me insite to what I need.

Its probably been said before I could get to it but seriously you must be joking right?
Colt Series 70s arent collectable, and arent worth anything. RIA is a range blaster, not something to bet your life on. Not that most of the Colt 70s were either but theyre a bit better odds wise. |

I had 2 series 70's for years. No more reliable than my SA 1911A1, sorry, but true.
Nevertheless, both are great pistols. |

I shot my friends RIA and it felt like shit even compared to my springfield. The fit and finish was shit, the slide wouldent lock back. OKOK I know not all RIA are like that. But it put a bad taste in my mouth. |

I bought a 95+ condition series 70 9mm for just a bit more then that last year. I can buy a NIB with papers 1974 series 70 right now for right around $825.00, never been fired. Yes, you might get more but thats really all it's worth. It's worth maybe $275-$300 at a gun shop. I loves me my Colt 1911s and I keep up on pricing reasonably well. This isn't the best time to be selling, the market has sagged quite a bit firearm wise. |

I did not own it for long since I bought it for $300 from a coworker who needed the $$$ and later sold it for $400 but I wonder how well it would hold up over thousands of rounds. There's something with the firing pin, I think, that makes the Series '70 guns more desirable than later model Colts. If you had one NIB with all papers it would be worth bank, but not one drug around as a duty weapon for years.
Edit : When Colt went to Series '80 they made it so the firing pin would not go forward if pistol was dropped a certain way. This "safety" feature helped the value of the Series '70 since they did not have it. |

You know the Colt is not completely safe at home in your safe?
Perhaps the risk of theft and fire at home offsets the risk of carry? I'm not a rich man, but I don't think twice about carrying one of my 2k Wilson Combat's. At least I know where one of them is that way.

I started off carrying a RIA, paid less than 300 when they first appeared, it was worth what I paid and it worked, I don't own it anymore a friend does. I own and carry 2 early 70's made Combat Commander's now.
I wish I could change my user name.
