Gerber LMF instead. I just picked up a pair of them. Very nice for the money. As for the KaBar, I'd rather get the original. |
|
I wouldn't get any of the serrated ones. I have the regular Marine one, it'd be more useful for regular knife duties (instead of fighting) if it had a shorter blade.

Is there a particular reason you're looking at getting one of the newfangled overpriced ones instead of a standard KaBar? No reason really, I would prefer a black handle, that's all. I was thinking a serrated section would be nice, but it's not an absolute necessity. |

Ok, which one is the original KA-BAR, the 5-1/4" or 7" blade?
They are both $80, that isn't much cheaper than my first choice. |
|
Get COLD STEEL
|
|
Get it in the 5 1/4" size. It's definitely large enough while still being practical. It's not the original size but in my opinion it's more useful.

80 smacks for a plain vanilla K-Bar?
Just bought one from Amazon for 47.& change. shipping was free too. |
|
I don't plan on paying retail, I am quoting retail prices for comparison.

D2 is a high carbon tool steel. This means it won't snap as easy as stainless, retains an edge like stainless steel, is easy to sharpen like high carbon steel, and much tougher than either. http://www.fototime.com/91708E6DF7C6721/standard.jpg Oh, the structure of D2 steel also allows a coloring finish to be applied that is durable and long lasting. Color finishes applied to knife grade stainless steel tend to wear off quickly with moderate use. Great info, thank you. |

You're thinking about paying WAY too much.
www.thebladeshop.com You're welcome. Oh, and I'd get the original for display and the D2 for use. |

Here's a good price on the original. http://www.natchezss.com/product.cfm?contentID=productDetail&prodID=KY1217&src=tpCtg |

I own the D2 version, and the classic USMC leather griped version. I use the D2, as my go to all purpose knife. The knife holds a good edge, and won't rust. I mostly use the knife to open boxes, and to pick ice out of my freezer. The top knife doesn't even look like a classic K-Bar; the metals used in that version are also good, but I'd rather take the D2. The D2 also includes the Eagle sheath, which is a very nice condura nylon sheath.

D2 is better blade material. I hate to say it, but check ebay. They are running around 90 bucks.

Check your state laws. Back in the Rambo days a lot of states passed laws outlawing the original size and mandate blades less than 5 1/2 inches. I know it sucks, but if you buy the 7 inch one, you must be careful where you carry it.
