Sitting here watching Obama's meeting with the Canadian PM, and when the PM began speaking in French, I couldn't help but notice Obama just sitting there looking like a dope.

Have any of our past Presidents spoken other languages?

Bush spoke spanish.

And as I remember, he was noted as being the first who was bi lingual.  May be wrong though.

I'm pretty sure Bush has a pretty big grasp of Spanish.  Not fluent, but good enough.

Our Third most certainly did. I'm sure we've had a few.

No need to now.

Jefferson spoke French fluently.  There was one president (Taft maybe?) that could write the same translation in Greek with one hand and Latin with the other - simultaneously.

Thomas Jefferson could at least read in 5 or more languages:

http://wiki.monticello.org/mediawiki/index.php/Languages_Jefferson_Spoke_or_Read

Jefferson said in an April 12, 1817 letter to Joseph Delaplaine, "I was educated at William and Mary college in Williamsburg. I read Greek, Latin, French, Italian, Spanish, and English of course, with something of it’s radix the Anglo-Saxon." In addition to the languages he lists, there is some evidence that Jefferson was attempting German.[3]

Jefferson had dictionaries, vocabularies, and grammars in a number of other languages in his library. These included Arabic, Gaelic, and Welsh, amongst others. However, without confirmation from Jefferson himself, the most we can assume is that he was "dabbling" in these languages, and never achieved a notable degree of fluency.

Latin, Greek, French, and various other languages would have been common amongst our earlier Presidents.

Classical education FTW!

Both Adams and his son knew Latin and French.  His son was also the ambassador to Russia at one point so may have picked up on some Russian during that period, though the diplomatic language was still French.

I think Jefferson spoke something like a half dozen languages.  He was a very well educated man.

Herbert Hoover translated De Re Metallica from Latin to English.  De Re Metallica is probably the most important mining textbook ever published.

TR was certainly fluent in German, he had the ability to recite pages of German poetry from memory.

If you remove Latin...

The first 4 spoke more than one language.  This is just off the top of my head though, recalling the reading done during AP American History in highschool 11 years ago..

Teddy R was also very well read and educated.   I remember reading that he would read many books (the same book) in multiple languages to see how they were different.

Typical libs are dumb as a box of rocks.

Anyone got POTUS' grades from Columbia? No. Harvard? No. Papers he might have written? No. Proof of brilliance? No. He sure as heck doesn't know Spanish or French. He was a little kid in Indonesia...he probably knows some Arab but won't admit to it for obvious reasons - and it probably amounts to just some pat phrases....
