Whatever happened to solidarity? I guess in the era of 'hope and change' it's every man for himself and the real winners are the CEOs and corporate fat cats
Boeing Co. employees vote to disband union Monday, September 14, 2009 Boeing Co. workers in North Charleston voted overwhelmingly to disband their union in a move that could give the region an edge in landing an aircraft plant the company is looking to build. Of the 267 ballots cast, 199 were in favor of decertifying the election that made them members of the International Association of Machinists. The company was pleased; the union was disappointed. The local plant makes rear fuselage sections for Boeing's 787, a new fast-selling lightweight jet that has been delayed by snags with suppliers and an eight-week strike last year by the IAM. Boeing has said it would consider North Charleston and its manufacturing hub outside Seattle, among other sites, for a new 787 assembly plant. A decision is expected by the end of the year. http://www.postandcourier.com/news/2009/sep/14/boeing-co-employees-vote-to-disband-union/ |

Smart move. These workers want to keep their jobs, and know the plant is likelier to be shut down in the future if unionized.
|
|
Wow, signs of hope all over. Now if we could stop union officials from writing $787 Billion legislation...

They are just trying to compete with the Chinese. Really I suspect someone detected a change in the wind, specifically a change to China.

Good for them. They are no longer only as good as the least among them.
In 1986 the union I was in voted to decert. I was a chief steward at the time & fully expected to be canned the next day. I wasn't and I'm still working for the same company. The propaganda I'd been fed all my life, growing up in a union household, was wrong. As it turns out, life got ALOT better without the union. I no longer had to represent IDIOTS who all too often were the cause of their own problems. Surprisingly, no former union member was fired by the company. The idiots eventually all left of their own accord. |
|
Good for them! Of course the Boeing employees in WA will stay unionized to the end, even after they figure out that it doesn't take a rocket scientist to bolt a few fuselage sections together. They don't build 787s anyway, they come in a kit, some assembly required.

I hope Boeing gives the 787 assembly line to the North Charleston outfit. It would definitely send a message to the unions.................... |

Great news for Boeing. Now if only Lockheed employees would do the same (would definitely make my Dad happy).

The caption is misleading, I was thinking the entire company, which will never happen

OP, why exactly is getting rid of the union a bad thing? |
|
Good for Them............American workers are finally waking up!!!
|
|
See where this goes.
The Unions sure as fuck didn't save my job and if these guys can keep their wages and benefits in this trying time so much the better for them and the company. |

Fuck Seattle, fuck the unions, and fuck...you know what follows.

IMPOSSIBLE!!! everyone on arfcom knows you can't vote unions out!!! COMMUNISM plain and simple!!!
so much for this arfcom falacy!!!!! i hope it works out and they get they're factory. i give a shit if its union or not... i just wants more americans to have good paying jobs with benefits. |
|
I wonder if that union is the same as the IAW used in WA?
As someone who used to work at Boeing,I can tell you the notion that all of the people there are union lovers is wrong. I was not the only one that saw the union as parasites and protectors of the worthless. |

I think this is a little different the the UAW voting to decert at Government motors. I would be willing to bet there would be thinly veiled death threats against any member known to vote to disband the union. This is why they want to do that Card Check thing, so votes would be public knowledge, thus you know if you vote against the union, you are risking you and your family. |

Boeing has a substantial amount of losses stemming from Union strikes on their 10K from last year. That and the economic downturn certainly did not help them.
This isn't going to make Boeing sad. It certainly doesn't make me sad. |

We must be reading different news stories. The one I read the employees banded together to make a change that will make their plant more likely to get new work, less likely to get the ax, and pushed some fat cats that took a chunk of their pay every week out of power. |

wow now they will actually "make" money, instead of getting paid.
|
|
I'll just guess that a fair number of those folks have fresh memories of lay offs from the furniture or flooring industry and prefer working for a paycheck to surviving on the dole.

Now. Fire the 68 socialists who voted to keep the union. No need to. They'll leave of their own accord quickly enough. |

IMPOSSIBLE!!! everyone on arfcom knows you can't vote unions out!!! COMMUNISM plain and simple!!! so much for this arfcom falacy!!!!! We now that union members can get rid of a union. You calling it a fallacy speaks volumes to the fact that you are either incapable of comprehending what you read here, or you just intentionally lie about it to misrepresnt things to try and make your invalid arguements seem valid. We just know that 99% are so gutless and incapable of making it in the world without a protection racket that they are scared to death to man up and get rid of the union or go work without it. Otherwise every union out there would have a decertification petition floating right now, even if it does not succeed. A real man or woman of courage and integrity with a real work ethic doesn't need a union to make it in the world. A person of integrity won't take money that comes from a government backed extortion scheme, no join an organization that does not reflect their views for a few more dollars. Congratulationsd to the Boeing workers for manning up and dumping the socialists. |

But without the union they will be making 1 an hour and using childrens!!!

Winddummy himself has made the implied threats saying that I should come down to his union hall and tell them what I think and see what happens- it is in the archives. He knows good and well just how the racket works, but as long as he keeps getting his few extra $$$ he will defend them. Moneyy trumps integrity for these guys. It is like the battered spouse with the black eye saying "But he says loves me (cares for the working man) and I don't have anywhere to go or have any money (I can't make it in the real world and free market)" as she keeps going back. |

That is a great picture. ANd LOL at the machinist union losing some dues. Guess they will have to jack up dues on the other suckers. |

(its in the archives) when we stand in silence for fallen soldiers try not standing then. yes we do have integrity. |
