So for the past few days my desktop has been almost unusable. About every 30 seconds a message pops up that someone is trying to access Outlook email, or trying to log on to skype though my computer. It deleted "spybot search and destroy" off of my machine and I can not reinstall it now. It will not let me access either of my two hard drives or any files that are saved there. Luckily I have most everything backed up though. And worst of all, when I turned it on this morning it had several .jpg's on my desktop that were titled "I am gay",. "I love gay porn" ect...lol. And the pics were not very pleasant
 Anyway, does anyone know how to identify this virus, or get it off of my system without a complete reformat?

Try malwarebytes (sp) Then get linux.

If everything is backed up then why not reformat and reinstall your operating system.....it's what I'd do
In fact I do it about every 6 months anyway. Keeps the pc running it's best. Cheers Taffy JFYI stop surfing the gay porn...

Doesn't XP Pro have a repair option when you put the disk in?Where did you back stuff up?

here's the basics.
Go to a Known-Good computer. (no virus) Insert a USB card Download malwarebytes, AVG anti-virus, CCleaner, and Adaware to the USB. Go to the virus computer REstart, and hit F8 on the bootup to enter safe mode Instert the USB. Install the software from the USB and run each REboot the machine as normal. TRG |

There are some new viruses running around that are extremely difficult to defeat. Most of them are rootkits or they replace windows system dlls, making virus scanners completely worthless against them. If you've got everything backed up, it might be easier to format your hard drive and copy all your backups back in. |

I just finished defeating a bad virus this morning here at work. Combofix was the only tool that would work that the virus couldn't defeat. |

Also makes sure you have a good antivirus program running 24/7 once you get your computer fixed. |

go to download.com and install Avast! antivirus on your machine. this will cure and prevent. malwarebytes is also great. also, if you don't want a to get a virus don't click on stuff that you don't know what it is. if your not sure and you don't absolutely HAVE to know what's @ the link, DON'T CLICK IT!! also, avoid myspace like the plague.

Always back up at least weekly and it's a good idea to keep a spare junk pc around. They can be used to test ,scan files and other drives, surf etc. and if they get jacked up oh well. The spare pc can also be used for testing your back ups if you have the same programs on both. When i first got a pc i thought i was saving some stuff only to find out i hadn't.
With the jpgs you mentioned i'm wondering if you use wireless or have any friends that might have installed something. When you say desktop do you mean as in not laptop or clicking icons? Making a desktop print screen and using it as a wallpaper then remove all the desktop icons has happened before. I have never had anything like this but what does it say when you try to access your drives and program files? Can you still log in as admin? I've been hearing about nasties being transferred from usb and external drives for a while also. Check out eset when you get it running again. |

Get ubuntu linux. It is free and anybody with intermediate computer skills can install and use it. Don't listen to this crap - XP works just fine. Unfortunately most people stupidly surf the web (or let other people use their PC) logged in as Administrator. If you had created User/Limited accounts for web work, wives, etc. then even if they tried really, really hard to install malware, it couldn't. Because of this Microsoft added "User Account Control" (UAC) to Vista. So you see, it's all your fault. Suck it up. |
