Not using it right now, but I'm still waiting for some "Top-up" money I requested some time ago under the old GI bill.

Nothing yet. BAH is supposed to start at the END of September...I don't know how the hell I'm supposed to make it until then...but I s'pose I'll survive.

Nope, it was supposed to start Sept. 1, paying for August.  And the book stipend was supposed to be there your first day of classes, I wasn't expecting that (since I doubt many schools start on the same day) but I was hoping for Sept. 1....

The guys that quit their jobs or cut their hours are really fucked at this point...

I received certification for bennifits July 6th.  All my info is in the computer, as well as my direct deposit info....no reason what-so-ever bennies shouldn't have started on time...

eta- except the fact that it is the VA, DoD, and the Treasury Dept we are talking about...

You shouldn't have had to pay for school....with your certificate of eligibility from the VA, the school should've given you a tuition contract...basically says the VA is going to foot the bill, but if they don't it's on you...

Course, my books this semester cost more than my tuition, sooo....

From what they told me- I had to pay to register and they would reimburse me when the money came in.

It's only community college so not too expensive but still.. I put off taking a job so I could finish my college work. It'd be nice to have this stuff come in on time unlike any payments since I got into the reserves.

So I just got off the phone with Moskegee, and it would seem that I am in week 5 of a 4-6week 'processing time'.  What the fuck is there to process?  They certified, they have ALL my information, the school confirmed I'm registered.  What the fuck is there to process?

I'm still in the air over old vs. new. I paid all the way into the old, plus the $600 kicker. I have scholarships already with the state of Florida that should cover all of college anyway. Looks like under old GI Bill I could just pocket the money, wheras new GI they pay straight to school.

Advice?

Still waiting, but then I just got everything finished last week.

The veteran's center on campus told me they figure people will start getting money around middle to end of Sept.

Just found this on the VA's website:

Post-9/11 GI Bill

Published on: August 26, 2009

Some of you might see some money from us in your bank accounts today.
Individuals eligible for the Post-9/11 GI Bill and with a certified
enrollment period during August were to receive their first housing
allowance payment starting September 1st, 2009 (remember the housing
allowance is paid in arrears). It's recently come to our attention that some
housing allowance payments have been processed early and that some of you
might be receiving them in your bank account or by mail starting today.

If this happens to you please be aware that this is your allowance payment
for the month of August, and that your next housing allowance payment will
not take place till on or after October 1, 2009.

Well, it's the government you're talking about here.

On top of that, they underestimated the demand for this new G.I. Bill.  They're going to be playing catch-up for awhile.

There's a lot of stipulations surrounding transfer of Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits.

The best thing would be to talk to someone who REALLY knows the ins and outs of the process.  I've read everything I can, and there are parts that still aren't clear.

Is that REALLY the card you're going to play?  You volunteered.  You got a paycheck.  Anything more than that, you should be immensely grateful for.

The new benefits are great for us... bitching because you didn't get a payment on the exact date that you hoped for, when the program is brand new, is silly.

You should be used to the way the govn't operates, by now.  Comparatively, the VA is doing a pretty good job handling this.

No, it's not the card I want to play, I appologize, it's been a very shitty couple of months for me and I'm out of pain meds .

BUT when I enlisted, I entered into a legally binding contract with the US Govt.  A stipulation of that contract was the MGIB.  It is money that I am owed, money that I earned.  And it wasn't a date I had hoped for, it was a date the VA/DoD/Tres Dept (not sure who actually handles the payouts) stated that the funds would arrive.  The program officially opened 1Aug2009, and the first payments (for those that started school in Aug) should have hit bank accounts 1Sept2009.   I was never given a date for the book/supplies stipend, I assumed it would hit with the first BAH payment, but since I was given no date, I can't really bitch about that one, but the BAH payment had a solid date attached to it.

Sure I know how the .gov works, I was just hoping the VA would be a little different, my mistake there

It sounds like you made a mistake.  If you payed into the MGIB, you have the option of taking that over the Post-911 GI Bill.  They're two different things.

That is correct.  But troops that served 90 days AD post 9/11 were given the option to convert their MGIB (Ch 31 I think?) into the new and improved Ch. 33 Post 9/11 MGIB.  It would substitute the previous MGIB that I signed a contract for, I signed new paperwork (another binding agreement between the .gov and myself) stating that I was accepting the P9/11MGIB in place of the previous MGIB.

Look at it this way.  You are offered a job.  You sign an agreement to work X job for X pay.  Later on you get a promotion/raise.  You sign a new agreement to work Y job for Y pay.  You are just as entitled to Y pay as you were previously entitled to X pay, as you entered into agreement with your employer specifying (is that a word?) the change.

Yea. The VA rep at my school told me about the backlog and stuff as soon as I talked to her. She's been immensely helpful with the entire process. To the guys that paid out of pocket, someone is screwing you. The only thing I had to pay for up front was the books, and that's what's hurting, my books cost more than an entire month of bills, and I was barely making enough to pay them in the first place.

So I just got off the phone with Moskegee, and it would seem that I am in week 5 of a 4-6week 'processing time'.  What the fuck is there to process?  They certified, they have ALL my information, the school confirmed I'm registered.  What the fuck is there to process?

No joke.  I mean, they've already had to process everyone's GI Bill in past years so wtf.  When I did VONAPP, I applied for the new 9/11 GI Bill and attached a copy of my DD-214.  It should be as simple as "Ok, he's good to go...write up letter."  Then on to the next person...it should take like 5 fucking minutes max per fucking person.

I am still a bit confused with the post 9/11.  (I am a bit drunk so bear with me)

I served from 1996 till 2003.  I am assuming I am eligable for the post 9/11.  But I have already used a portion of my MGIB but I have not exhausted it.
I cannot find anywhere on the va,gibill.   I did post a question under the FAQs.  I am awaiting a reply.

I am trying for a career change.  I wouldnt mind swapping if it is beneficial to me.  Although I am not sure of how many months I have under the MGIB.

if the time after 2001 was AD then you should be good...

if it was reserves / guard then you have to look at the service times and see if you qualify.

no idea about if you already used part of your MGIB

I received my BAH for August a few days ago (classes started on Aug 24 here).
The guys in charge of the processing here at Iowa stated that they put in for the benefits fairly early though.

I know a few people in Colorado that have received their monthly BAH.  So that's good news for them.

ok I JUST got the letter from the VA saying they received my application.....  any ideas from the guys who've gotten their payments already as to how long I should be expecting?

also, checking with my financial aid dept. here at school- the lady messed up submitting the applications so I'm sure that's not going to help either.

I'm still in the air over old vs. new. I paid all the way into the old, plus the $600 kicker. I have scholarships already with the state of Florida that should cover all of college anyway. Looks like under old GI Bill I could just pocket the money, wheras new GI they pay straight to school.

Advice?

In your case I would absolutely use the MGIB instead of the post 9/11.  I also paid in the $600 extra and depending on what I decide to use mine for, I'll probably be keeping the MGIB.  The new one is good if you plan on a normal 4 year undergrad course of study, but I'll be using mine either for flight training or post-grad studies.  Either way the MGIB makes better sense.
