The recent thread bashing the 80s, and the great thread about Ronald Reagan's speech, got me thinking.
I like many here, lived through the 80s with Reagan as President. All my recollections of him as President were positive. I also recall this time being very "Pro American" in movies, tv, etc... Red Dawn just being one positive movie of the decade.  So, do you feel this time frame helped mold you into the person you are today? The kind of person that supports the 2nd. The kind of person that looks at what is going in this country with sadness, and also utter contempt at the same time? Maybe I'm just being sentimental and all, but I can't help thinking the 80s were a positive time in my life. |

I remember that well. after Vietnam, and Watergate than having to live through four years
of failure that was Jimmy Carter Ronald Reagan made it OK to be proud of America again. |

Yes the 80's did help mold me into what I am today. Hell it started my interest in guns that's for sure. The entire popular pro gun culture of today has roots there. Look at the movies like Rambo and anything with Arnold in it. It was a time when we really felt like the good guys and all this political correctness hadn't started to creep into our lives yet. The end of the cold war is kind of a big thing.

I grew up all through HS in the early 80's and after that served under the Great President Reagan in the Marine Corps. It was a positive time for me.

In 1980 I was a Freshman in HS. In 1989 I was a Navy veteran, married with a young daughter. Was a very productive and fun 10 years.
The 80s were pretty much friggin' awesome.

I was in the Army in the 80's. Reagan gave the military it's dignity back, after it was gutted by Carter's budget cuts. |

The 80s were the best, however, I was born in 72, so my fun years growing up were mostly in the 80s. I would've maybe felt a little different had I been older going into the decade, but as a kid, it was awesome. I traveled every summer all over the U.S. and Canada with my grandparents and saw so many wonderful sights. I was also much healthier. As of 1994 life began to kinda suck for me, physically and mentally. Looking back, I'd give anything to relive the 80's, just leaving out the part of going to school.
I still think the music beats anything from the 90's or today. I'm unsure why people hate the 80s, unless they didn't grow up then and/or had a poor time getting by in some way during the decade. I used to think the 70s were shit and I still think many aspects of the 70s are awful, but now that I'm older I'm able to appreciate a lot of excellent music and other aspects of that period too, most of which I didn't enjoy being so young. |

Reagan was the first President I got to vote for. He was also Commander in Chief during my 3 year (82-85) stint in the Army. I have a lot of warm feelings about the 80's.

I however remember how scared my folks were losing everything in the early 80s My grandfather did lose almost everything he gained alot back in the late 80s early 90s but nothing like the company he had in 1976-1981 |

I was born in 75, does that mean I grew up in the 80's? I mean of course I did, but I was too young for politics to mean anything to me, I was influenced by the music and other normal things kids are influenced by.

I had a blast in the '80's.
President Reagan was my CIC, spent time after I got out of the service going from one state to another to see where I wanted to live, Met a wonderful woman and married her. |

This is pretty much what I would post. I graduated from high school in 1985. I remember the national malaise that existed and permeated the Carter years. I also remember that after Reagan was elected, all of that seemed to change. It well and truly was "ok" to be proud of the USA again, I'm proud to have been alive during his presidency and am proud to have served in the Army with him as my CinC. The 80s were great and I'd gladly repeat them. |

Nothing wrong with the 80's at all...disco was dead, America was strong, the economy was (mostly) fine. The music was pretty darn good. Girls looked great in acid washed denim mini-skirts. I went through high school and college (82-90).

The 80s had a lot of things going for them that were unique to that decade. This decade does also.
Let me just give a few phrases: B-52s (band), Maritime Strategy (13 carriers), deregulation, mail order ammo (apologies to mg fans), young Daryl Hannah, Road Warrior etc. |

Red Dawn was released 31 days before I left for Parris Island. I wanted sooooooo bad to go kill a commie for mommy! The worst was keeping mom conviced the Corps was o.k. after Beruit. I was already in delayed entry when it happened... Overall I would say the 80's were a really good time with a ton of learning and responsibility thrown in... Chris BTW...I stayed a drunk to survive the clintoooons. Don't really remember much after 1992. |

I miss the '80s.
I graduated HS in 1980. Moved out on my own that same year. Moved back to Southern California in 1982. Had some pretty decent jobs, including magazine editor when I was 20. Learned to fly. Turned 21 in 1984. Married the following year 
My only child was born in '87. Yeah, it was a good decade. I miss those times. |
