I wish I could afford one, let alone afford to shoot it much.

Those look awfully expensive.  Have you considered Birdman's kit, it's very cheap?

Hey, I was looking at one of those and decided to go with the Tromix .458 SOCOM and it is awesome!! You can reload for it fairly cheap and Corbon factory loads for it as well!! take a look at www.teppojutsu.com Marty there is a good guy and very informative of the .458 upper and you can use your normal AR15 lower, and your hi-cap mags!

I will admit at 300yds and beyond it may not be as fun with a .458 SOCOM but up close it is a blast!! My rationale was I could get the .458 upper for $865 from Tromix and get 300 cases to reload for $120 more and that had me way cheaper and I had ammo when it was all done. Granted I too must have a .50BMG upper, someday.[>(]

Have you considered a .50 cal upper from Watson's  Weapons.

Does that thing beat the crap out of your lower? It looks interesting, but we folks in the PRK cannot risk damaging our lowers as we can't replace them. Perhaps that upper is a good candidate for that DPMS single-shot lower?

Isn't 18" a little short for 50 BMG? I wonder how it would balance with the 36" barrel?

I know a couple people who have 50 cal uppers for their ar's and they have had no damage to the lower at all.

If you're worried about damaging your lower, just pick up one of the Tannery Shop cut-your-own-lowers.  You won't have to do all of the work on it, since these .50BMG uppers (disclaimer: my understanding, may be wrong) don't use the buffer.  They certainly don't use the mag well or the bolt-hold-open catch.  So you just have to drill a few holes (rent an OSI jig for a weekend) and maybe mill out the hammer/trigger/&c cavity.

You could go even simpler than that, actually.  A couple of pieces of plate steel, plus a screw-on aluminum trigger housing. . . .

Seems like it'd be a lot for those (relatively) small takedown/pivot pins.

Definitely a 36" upper.  You want all the velocity you can get.  Be prepared, the muzzle blast will blow the ears off a brass monkey..
