Albemarle County leaders are partnering to provide gun safety training, as more people are applying for concealed weapons permits. County Sheriff Chip Harding and Commonwealth's Attorney Denise Lunsford are working on the new program.
The Sheriff's Department provides the hands-on training needed to carry a concealed weapon, and the Commonwealth's Attorney adds in the legal knowledge gun owners need.
Virginia law allows an online concealed gun-carrying course, but Lunsford and Harding say the in-person course offers more.
"What we're trying to do is team up together and offer this community a higher level of training. Not only how to properly use a firearm, but also the legalities around that. That's not normally part of the firearms course," says Sheriff Harding.
"It's a great opportunity for us to educate [people] on what the law is. When Chip approached me, we were more than happy to help with that," says Lunsford, the Commonwealth's Attorney.
Sheriff Harding says the number of people applying for concealed-carry permits is double what it was four years ago. He says nearly 700 people in Albemarle County could get concealed gun permits this year.
