I was driving my full size truck home the other night when I saw something that made me chuckle. About 10 miles outside of town there was this idiot half pulled onto the shoulder, half standing in traffic, with a gas can in hand filling his prius! I know anything can run out of gas, but it just seemed ironic.

Confusing people. Especially the smug owners. Somehow, they think the reason for the in-town efficiency is because the engine shuts off at traffic lights. Or that it has an electric motor.
No, it is because the kinetic energy is partially recovered instead of being dissipated as heat in the brakes. The engine is a detuned Otto Cycle (called the Atkinson Cycle but in reality, a Miller Cycle without the supercharging) so it has a bit of thermodynamic advantage there but only acceptable since the hybrid drive compensates and allows it to run with greater demand. It still isn't more efficient than a Diesel Cycle. |

The only think worse than the Prius is the "Smart" car.
Ford has the right idea with their Fusion Hybrid; looks like a normal car, reasonable size, decent performance and affordable. |
