mine was 12 weeks when i got him.
i put his crate next to my bed and went to sleep with my fingers poking through the wire, so he could sniff them if he got lonely. he settled down in a couple of weeks to where he would sleep in his crate in the kitchen.
play with him til he's worn out at night, then put him up in his crate. he'll start crashing for the whole night soon enough.

we've got an 8 week old Lab pup right now, our forst puppy in years, so i feel your pain...

+1 I used to think the idea of crate training was cruel and unusual punishment until I actually learned about it. The whining will stop and the dog will love her crate if it is used correctly.  I thought we would get rid of our crate, but our dog really likes it so now we just leave the door open and he can come and go as he pleases.

I always use a small crate or box next to the bed with puppies. I want them to sleep in the bedroom at night as adults, but not on the bed, and it has always worked well for me with 8 different Goldens, but  I have never have raised a GSD. I am thinking though that our next puppy will be

When we first got our puppy (English Springer) we got him a crate. The first week or two was terrible, he wouldn't shut up. Soon enough though, he began to love his crate.

We used to feed him in his crate, and it was pretty cool. He got so used to the routine that he learned how to open the door to his cage (even if it was partially locked) and would unlock it with his nose when it was time to eat.

Got any pics of your new puppy?

My 1yo GSD goes into her crate on her own now at bedtime. Sometimes wedon't even close the door, she just feels like that's her safe place. Crate training is great, especially for GSD's.

Feed her in the crate as well.  Leave the door open and place the food in there every time she gets fed...  She will end up happy to be in it.

How old is the pup?  If we're talking 3 weeks, yeah, they'll sleep all the time.  By 5 or six weeks, they should be playing for a while, then crashing and sleeping, then playing, etc..  By ten weeks... they should be playing most of the day, with a few naps.  If you're not seeing that, have the pup checked out.

Mine is only 4.5 months old

Lucky for her I love her to death...... She sure gets into mischief.

One week she ate a bag of walnuts, a can of cashews, and my wife's plain donut.
Then she comes walking out with a loaf of bread from the counter.

So we re-arrange the kitchen putting everything up higher yet again,
so then she just eats a box of tissues.

Denying access won't work.  If you put the tissues up, she'll find a shoe.  If all the shoes go into a closet, she'll find a couch cushion.  She needs to be taught not to chew.

One of the things we've been told is that they do need to chew but substitution is the key.  Everytime they start chewing on something they're not supposed to, put their chew toy in their mouth instead.

We're going through the same thing, Luger just turned 4 mos.

I have owned GSDs all my life. Crate train and don't let her con you with the whining. Puppies need lots of sleep and exercise. Don't push the exercise too hard though until she grows in to her bones.

no shit those are some fucked up dogs right there.  When you see a dog acting like that it will hurt someone when grown. Not out of being a badass but because someone has gone way past discipline with that dog and made them a worthless fearful dog. Whoever did that to those dogs is a POS.

They go from this

to this

in no time flat.

enjoy the puppy time. as far as the nipping, section off a part of the house, not the crate. if your dog starts to nip, give it three chances to stop by "yipping" - then toss it in there. They get the hint FAST that is no good. Get a 6' lead and TIE the dog to you in the house until you can trust it, keep it tied to you. Ours had 3 accidents her first week and is now 8 months old and hasn't had once since 9 weeks old.

I suggest Dr. Ian Dunbars book on how to raise a puppy. Positive training is great and can be frustrating as shit at times, but I highly suggest it. Builds a good bond with your dog. The old "beat it till it figures it out" is that, old.

Feed them in their crates, and if you want to give them a toy to play with outside of the crate, give them toys IN the crate. They learn fast "crate = good" that way. Associate a word like "crate" with them going in too. We say it in passing now and she will run to it!
