I just ran a couple of Google searches in different combinations of wording and came up with squat.

I haven't heard anything on FOX either.

It isn't mandatory ... yet.  The bill HR 1388 (The GIVE Act) is supposed to "encourage youth participation in voluntary community service"  There is a version of the bill in the House which proposes to establish a
Congressional Commission on Civil Service tasked with determining
whether a mandatory service requirement for all young people in America
could be developed and implemented.  It is not certain that this provision will survive in conference committee.



The problem is that taxpayer funds under the GIVE Act could end up
getting paid to volunteers in organizations that are doing political
advocacy activity.  Funds under the bill are designated to be distributed through AmeriCorps. AmeriCorps has a long distinguished history having their volunteers employed by community programs
with an ideological purpose supported by Democratic Party politicians,
including Planned Parenthood.  (can you say Party Youth Program?)



According to Fox News, the legislation could cost up to $6 billion over
five years and would create 175,000 "new service opportunities" under
AmeriCorps.



The Obama/Biden campaign website says
that "Obama and Biden will expand AmeriCorps and the Peace Corps with
"a goal that all middle and high school students do 50 hours of
community service a year, and will establish a new tax credit that is
worth $4,000 a year in exchange for 100 hours of public service a
year."




Ok, so you may or may not have to serve.  It is yet to be seen, but let's recap;



Banks,   Check... under government control (Tarp)

Industry, Check... under government control (see GM, et.al.)

Wages, Check...under government control (appointment of pay czar)

States, Check... under government control (can't refuse Stimulus $$)

Kids, Check.... under government control (Obama youth)

No details yet.  On an unrelated matter every member of ACORN has recently purchased a McMansion and a Maserati.  

Never fight a battle you cannot win.  Retreat until you have the strength to fight and win.  Otherwise, you waste your strength.

Add in that Obama is trying to fire the guy in charge of making sure AmeriCorps isn't full of pork and graft and that it got a $5 billion budget last month. And take a look at the Young Allies program that Obama was deeply involved in. And ACORN.

If they make it mandatory for everyone 25 and under before I get too old to "qualify", they'd better give me a nice pair of jackboots and a snazzy knife to go with my uniform.

Many countries (even quite a few that we do not loath) have mandatory service requirements.  The question, for me at least, is not so much the requirement, but the indoctrination that goes with it.  

My humble understanding (of one countries system), is that you decide your career path fairly early in the school system - essentially your education ends in an government sponsored internship.  When you "graduate" you are employable.

Whenever the Youth Corps comes into existence, join and destroy it from within like a good bureaucrat.  Inaction and incompetence are often rewarded in governmet jobs (and corruption too these days).  So, be a patriot and play your part and kill the beast from within.
