I live in a townhouse with a very small enclosed patio, so my next dog needs to be small.
I'd never been too fond of small dogs but through the years I grew to really like my friends Westie.
The same friends think the Corgi would be a better dog because they tend to be more obedient.

Suggestions or stories of personal experience welcome.
Here are some video of Corgi and Westie puppies.  Everyone loves puppies.

I have a housefull of Corgis and have had, for the past 25 years.  They're great dogs although people normally have at least two of them at a time for reasons unknown.  The only thing bad about them is that they shed something awful and if you're not into that, a Corgi is not for you.

I don't have any experience with those breeds. I can however say what NOT to get. I'm watching my brother's Jack Russell Terrorists while he's in Iraq...fucking pain in the ass dogs.
God I miss my Great Dane...now THAT was a dog.
She had the most evil sounding growl that I have ever heard.

I have a cardigan welsh corgi. Great dog, but they do shed a lot. He also topped out at about 50 lbs before we got his weight under control, but they aren't usually that big.

ETA:
Cute puppy pic.

And some adult pics.

Small apartment? Fuck dogs, useless in that situation.

Never needs walking, eats once a week, so docile you can watch t.v. with it and every robber entering your house will shit themselves several times over.

I absolutely love my Westie.

The only issue is that he sheds a lot, so you have to vacuum frequently.

I have a Corgi, but I'm currently at work so I cannot provide any pics (photobucket is blocked).

Corgis (I have a Pembroke) are a handful, especially when they're pups. They really do yearn for something to do, so if you're going to be gone most of the time and leaving the dog to it's devices, a Corgi would not be the best choice. They're pretty smart dogs (not quite as smart as Border Collies for example, but pretty damn smart) and typically have a very strong personality. They tend to be pretty bold and forget that they're a small dog when confronted with a larger animals/people.

Like many other dogs, they're very reward motivated (at least mine is, it seems) and they'll get fat easily if you feed them too much. This is a particular problem for them being a small herding dog , as it causes a lot of back and shoulder problems. They'll live to be ~14 year old dogs if kept at the right weight.

IM me if you want some more info and/or pics. I should be able to hook you up with some pics of my 9 year old Corgi by tomorrow.

I had pits growing up. My first and longest dog relationship was a female pit I got as a pup when I was 8-9 yo.
I have been wanting to get another for sometime, but been waiting till I bought my own place, not renting.
ANYWAY, I had a stray beagle show up at the house. I live in the stix and shit heads love dropping there dogs off around here.
He adopted me, and is a awsome dog. So now i'm a beagle man.  I still love pits, may get another someday, but Beagles are awsome!

Whatever you do, please adopt, and don't buy a puppie from a puppie mill

If you adopt one, no matter the breed, it will truly love you and show you thanks every day.

Just do the animals a favor and adopt; don't support the puppy mills.

I'll have to agree with this. I don't know about the breeds you are looking at, also don't know anything about Great Danes. I have a Jack Russel mix, they are great dogs, but a pain in the arse. 0 to 70 in a second, intense little dogs, large dog ego in a little dog package, forget having a nice green lawn.

I'm lucky mine is only half Jack...

I vote Corgi. I have been a hardcore GSD person my whole life, but apartment living for a while required me to get a small-ish dog.
Even though I have a house now, I would still consider another Corgi for a second dog.

Here's my sable Pebroke Welsh Corgi as a pup and at about 6 months.

Reminds me of my Jack Russel mix, when he was a few months old. He would super hard and then crash out, people would come over and ask me if my dog was dead.

Ever hear of a Malti-Chon-Westie-Poo?  Neither had I.  But I adopted this little bastard the minute I met him.  He's 80lbs of attitude in a 20lb box.  Keeps my big dogs moving.  Name's Danzig.

My brother has a Pebroke Welsh Corgi and it bosses his German Shepard around! It is a neat little dog, but boy does it shed hair!   I own a  Westy (actually the wife had to have it) and it is a wonderful little companion(much smaller than the Corgi) that loves to play.   However I must say it lives up to the breeds reputation of being  intelligent, but stubborn.  Also the little rascal showed its hunting heritage by catching 4 birds in the backyard before it was 6 months old.  I think either would fit your criteria, but I admit I prefer Westies.

Growing up on the farm we had a Welsh Corgi. It was a fantastic dog that wasn't afraid of anything. It would help with the cows. By help I mean it would run around, round them, know exactly where they were supposed to go, go head to head with them, bite their nose if they challenged him, and grab their tail and try pulling them backwards if they went in the wrong spot. It was crazy to see a short 50lb dog doing all that.
That said.... you need a big dog for security, something like the Caucasian Shepherd. They are extremely loyal and will do anything to protect their "family".

All four of those are completely true.  Here is one of mine, as a puppy.  Every time we've brought a baby home from the hospital, she has stood guard over the baby 24 hours/day, and won't let other people or dogs near the baby.

People always ask me if I'm scared having these big dogs around my kids.  No.  Never.  But *twice*, I have seen what happens when someone threatens my family... my fear is that some day, someone will do something around my kids, that my dogs will interpret as a threat.  The two times it's happened before, luckily, the dogs could not reach the people... even my wife was terrified of what she saw out of the three dogs, trying to protect our family.

Mine are only half CO.  Full COs can often be SO territorial that they become a true liability as pets.  One of the reasons is that they are not like most dogs, which will get agitated and bark at you.  They just sit there, silently observing, until you "cross the line", and then they make you pay for it.  Because of that, a lot of people think they just attack for no reason.  It's not true, but if you don't know what to watch for, you can get in a world of hurt.

In any event, they're not dogs for condos.  Amazing dogs, but not for condos.

In parting... any idea why they call them "bear dogs"?
