It seems very strange to me that buckshot is about the same price as it was 3 years ago but .380 is $50 per box.

I actually thought about NOT saying anything....

But it needs to be said.....   The fact that buckshot and slugs have not boomed in price proves that all the "reasons" for the huge increases in ammo prices are complete bullshit!

Birdshot is more expensive now then it was a few months ago.  I picked up a box for ~$20 last week.

Buck and slugs are still cheap and available (mostly) though, which is nice.

Shooters are buying up brass-cased centerfire ammo like 9mm, .45acp, 5.56mm, etc etc
The 'fudds' aren't buying up "their" calibers ie: .270 win, 12 gauge, 300win mag, etc etc

I live in a very 'fudd' area, and can buy hunting rifle ammo all day long, and have been able to for months. There never was any shortage.

But most ammo has trippled!!!!

Look at a case of wolf 7.62x39mm, 4 years it ago it could be had for $69.99 per 1k, now it CAN cost as much as $500 per 1k.

.380, 223, etc....

Shot has finally come back down some.

It was $10 a bag 2-3 years ago, went up to $50 in some places, now it's back down to $22.

The powder I use stayed at $86 for a long time but has crept up to $96.

Why have shotgun shells not exploded in price?

Because Glock doesn't manufacture shotshells?
Link Posted: 6/13/2009 10:02:49 AM EDT

The Hollywood and Glock fo-tay types don't realize how effective a shotgun is as a weapon. They are still thought of as "sporting arms"

Lack of price increase doesn't matter to me. All of the defense caliber buckshot(#4-00) has been just as scarce as 9mm and .45 locally. Plenty of slugs, "buckhammers", and birdshot, though.

It's to the point where I don't buy ANY of the excuses anymore....

1st... It was materials... brass, powder, lead, etc...

2nd. It was transport costs when fule was so high.

Then..  It was the war and all the powder, lead and components were being sent to Iraq.

Now the excuse is Obama......  And Obama has not and will not pass any new major restrictions..  He would like to but he won't.

Slugs even in a non rifled barrel are very effective at home defense distances. If that's all you can get,get it.I am talking protecting home/car not force projection.

Shotshells are produced and consumed in bulk quantities even in normal times so there's lots and lots of birdshot floating around out there. That's why there's plenty of 100 rd bulk packs of trap loads in Walmart just begging to be picked up. Shotgun ammo demand is also seasonal too and the past 7 months haven't been the peak demand months.

If most of the rawest of raw materials that normally wind up in shotshells have instead been sucked up by rifle and pistol ammo production over the past 7 months...

Might want to think about buying whatever Fudd ammo you want for the fall right now. I've noticed that there is plenty of ammunition that I don't want to buy on the shelves now. The shoe may be on the other foot in the fall when the Fudds have finished blasting clay pidgeons and checking the zero on their ultra magnum death ray rifles over the summer.

Market supply and demand conditions do not warrant an "excuse" of any kind...  Nobody is answering to you as to why these conditions drive up the price while also driving up the quantity that clears the market.  My guess is a rightward shift in demand, given the "tracks" of higher price and higher quantity clearing the market.

Shotgun hulls are primarily made of plastic, not brass, thus they're not nearly as subject to price increases due to metal scarcity.

Additionally, people want rifle and handgun ammo for because those are the weapons they would be using if the SHTF, not shotguns. Less demand, lower prices.

Those people would often be under gunned if facing opponents with $300 shotguns.

a good shotgun is probably the best SHTF weapon you can have. Assuming you will be in a defensive posture and not attacking armored columns. The wide range of ammunition such as slugs, buckshot, and game loads can protect you and yours plus put a wide range of food on the table. With tactical shotguns being as popular as they are at present I am sure there is a certain amount of resentment to your assessment.

A standard "box" is 25 rounds.

You are referring to a "value pack" of some sort.

Then, there are the newer 20 round Remington boxes that trick you because they are priced cheaper than a standard box.

Just a crazy idea but shotgun shells use very little brass for their size and use plastic instead, lead is cheap, cup is plastic, so really what you pay for is the primer, powder, shot and of course overhead.  Wad?  The plastic used probably costs next to nothing because of bulk/scale of economies.  Just a guess.

shotgun shooters chew through ammo like crazy.  Ask your local sporting goods store how many boxes of shotgun shells they sell vs all other ammo combined...or how much they take in.

Because there is such a higher consumption of shotgun shells, there is a lot more production.  A few guys deciding to horde shotgun ammo will have about the same impact as a few new guys getting into shooting clays.

some guy deciding to horde 44 magnum is giong to have a much more noticable effect on the local store shelves.

has no clue and EBR owners know which ones will be banned first and are panic buying those before considering anything else.

Example: there's a gun ban coming. Do you buy that AR-15 that you know will be banned (either by name or features), or that Winchester Model 70 in the walnut monte carlo stock that will probably still be available for a few years until the next ban?
Works the same way with ammo.

as a shotgun shooter this thread fails on a couple of fronts. shotshells have doubled in price in the last year. they are still going up even though the price of lead has dropped.  shot guns are really only good for self defense at short ranges.  at 100 yards the 9 pellet buckshot spread is about 20 feet. lets just say not such a dense pattern. slugs are not very accurate at 100 yards without sights and or a dedicated slug barrel.   i'm comfortable with a shotgun. i shoot in both trap and skeet leagues, to the tune of 400 rounds a week in competition. competitive shooters do not buy ammo. it is too expensive and you can't taylor your loads.  every competition shotgun shooter i have ever met, reloads.

that said, for a shtf situation my first choice is a rifle. in my case an ar.  30 rounds of light weight ammo / magazine.  good from across the room to 600 yards.
