      “We saw the shooter, stopped at my vehicle and got out my handgun and started to approach Peter,” Tracy Bridges, who helped subdue the shooter with other students, said Thursday on NBC’s “Today” show. “At that time, Peter threw up his hands and threw his weapon down. Ted was the first person to have contact with Peter, and Peter hit him one time in the face, so there was a little bit of a struggle there.”[/b]

The student who stopped Odighizuwa was apparently on the Today Show when he related getting his weapon and stopping him. Once it's on TV and in first-person, it's kind of hard to ignore. MSNBC picked up on the story. Perhaps the mindset is changing over there, as reflected by the recent addition of Alan Keyes as one of their talking heads.

However, this action does not fit the worldview of the general media. To them, guns are BAD. Therefore, no one can do anything good with a gun. If someone (who is not a law enforcement officer) uses a firearm in defense of self or other, it is missed by the majority, or glossed over. Certainly it's not important enough to report.

Do some research into the Pearl, Mississippi school shooting. An assistant principle, Joel Myrik, went to his truck (parked off school property in compliance with the "gun free zone" law) and retrieved his handgun, then found and held Luke Woodham at gunpoint until the cops arrived several minutes later. Thankfully, no one was stupid enough to charge Myrik with the felony of having a "gun on school property" for doing that, but I have to wonder how long it took him to get to and back from his truck, which had to be parked a minimum 1,000 feet away from the school property line. I'm curious as to whether or not Woodham was charged with that violation. The law sure prevented him from coming on campus, didn't it? But in almost NO cases was the fact that Myrick had used a firearm mentioned in media reports. Dan Rather just noted that he had "subdued" Woodham, but not how.

You're seeing an example of this in action. Its corollary is that many gun-involved homicides (where the victim is an innocent citizen) are often picked up nationally, where when a citizen kills a criminal it generally ends up on page B11 of the local newspaper. (Hyperbole - barely) Period. If a citizen defends himself without actually shooting, it isn't reported anywhere.
