All you should need is a bill of sale and a serial number. Submit to the local tax collector and get your title. That should be it.

I'm not sure of the exact process, but it can't be too hard. Boats aren't even titled in some states.

Ok you have to go to The Department of Game and Inland Fisheries NOT DMV for the title (In VA) ? I had to do it and it was pretty painless. If you are near or in Richmond there is one on broad street.

In NC boats may or may not be titled, some are just registered. If it is just registered here, there may be a lien but it won't stop a transfer.
Thus, I know that in NC you can get a notorized bill of sale that has a model, length, hull material, and serial number and the Wildlife Resources Commission will send you a registration- and if it has never been ttitled you can opt to have one issued. The last two aluminum boats (both 1960's models) I purchased had never been registered in NC and had no serial numbers, although I knew the maker and year. I simply created a serial #, attached a data plate, and put that info on the bill of sale from the owner. All good to go. |

If so, will it stand in the way of me being able to purchase the boat and put in my name? I just don't want to buy the boat and have someone come after me for an old dept on the boat before I can get a clean bill on it. |
