All these years I just put it in 1st gear, unless it's on a hill i use the e-brake at the same time. they told me to but it in "R" instead - true?
My biggest fear is that I forget about it being in 1st gear when I start the car, letting up the clutch and then end up hitting the front of my garage |

I put it in 1st and engage the parking brake. I put it in R if I'm nose-down on a large hill.

Yes, at least it used to be of a lower ratio (that was the justification IIRC). If facing downhill, R is not going anywhere. Oh, and if you have even seen the puny internal brake in a auto transmission, you would ALWAY use the parking brake on an auto trans. |

I also worried about forgetting it was in 1st when I started it up, when I was 12. |

Yes, reverse and parking brake. Reverse is the lowest gear; you want to make gravity work as hard as possible to overcome the engine compression and move the car.
Why would you forget that it's in gear? Are you in the habit of leaving it in neutral? |

2nd gear and E-brake.
I also always use the E-brake on auto's. Use it or lose it. |

I warm up a little in neutral before taking off anyway. |

I just use the E-brake, unless I'm on unlevel terrain.
I use first gear when I do park in gear. |

In second with the parking brake on
Every now and then I forget to put it in gear but the parking brake will hold it.... That is until I go to pop the hood and instead accidentally reset the parking brake and my truck crashes through my garage door. It's ok though, I have an awesome set of tools and I can fix it. |

I haven't got the cash to do the tr3650 swap in my Crown vic yet , but I work on manual trans cars all the time , and if I'm on relatively flat ground , it gets parked in first w/no brake. On a hill , I'll use the brake and leave it in first.
The exception is if the vehicle MUST be parked in reverse , like many SAABs and corvettes. |

I deploy my bed monkey to set wheel chocks when i park....If hes asleep or pissy then I use R & E-brake

I always just leave it in the gear it's in and set the parking brake. Usually 2nd gear. Should I be changing it to 1st gear after I park?

E-brake only on reasonably level ground, e-brake and 1st gear if on a significant slope.

If your engine has a timing belt, you should park in the gear the car is facing, downhill, first, uphill, reverse. Why? The timing belt PULLS the the cam, reversing the engine direction will cause timing to be off for just an instant as the tensioner becomes over-tensioned and the normally tight side becomes slack.
This is even more of an issue in interference engines. This also applies to older 6x6 military trucks (deuce and a halfs, five tons etc) which have sprag clutches in the transfer case. NEVER COAST BACKWARDS UNLESS THE TRANSMISSION IS IN REVERSE!!! This causes driveline wind-up which can lock the transmission. Things will break if you don't. |

We don't have hills in Florida so I put it in the gear that I'm going to need it to be in when I leave.

I used to keep my truck in gear + parking break until the parking break broke (stupid GM, common occurrence –– break works but won't stay engaged by itself. The replacement part it pretty cheap, but the labor is really expensive. So now it's just kept in gear.

Always ebrake and gear. To those who worry about going through the garage wall, any good stick driver always starts with the clutch on the floor.
