I'm thinking about learning some Arabic for a project at work.

How difficult is it to learn to a conversational level?

You have massive skills if you can learn Arabic: 1) as an adult; 2)without it being a full time task

"Dirka dirka mohammad jihad!"

Arabic is very hard to speak and you can forget about reading it without going to Monterrey!

I have done some Arabic stuff on Rossetta and it is a pretty good program.

I am going to hit it hard this summer though because I am studying it in college.

Rosetta Stone is like a massive boost (better than Berlitz and other language tapes/books) but it still falls far short of actual 24/7 immersion!

That is an excellent idea.  Spend an hour a day at the least and you will progress quite well.  Give it at least 6 months to a year and you will have the basic understandings down.

مرحبا

I've been taking it the past 2 semesters in college and used Rosetta stone for about a month before that.

The alphabet isn't bad once you learn it and understand the sounds the letters make. Understanding and being able to make each letters sound is key.

From there pronouncing whole words isn't very difficult once you learn both the short and vowels.

I can say and understand simple functional phrases but making sentences is still difficult. My vocabulary isn't big enough and my grammar skills need work.

The grammar and conjugation has alot of similarities with Spanish when you start but after that it becomes much more in depth.

You could probably learn simple conversational phrases within a month, but don't expect to be able to make up sentences of your own.
