Having read that NewsMax article, I now actually have some respect for Dan Rather.  Quite a change from five minutes ago.

Ok, so he didn't make it through the training because he just wasn't physically up to it -- but it makes it clear that he did in fact join up with the Marines and tried to make it.

I read Stolen Valor a couple of months ago and highly recommend it to all.
The author shows the popular public perception of the Vietnam vet as drug addicted nut-job roaming our streets is a bunch of media created BS.
In addition to exposing Dan Rather as a phoney "vet",it also has a section on how Rather helped produce supposed "documentaries" showing Vietnam vets living in the woods because the military made them into "killing machines" unable to live in society anymore.
There was only one problem: these guys stories were all bullshit, a fact apparent after some basic research, but neither Dan Rather nor CBS let the truth get in the way of a good story.

No it does not.  It makes it clear that he joined up.  It does not make it clear that he tried to “make it”.  We had some Mary’s in basic that failed basic rifle marksmanship so that they would be booted out…I guess with some pride intact.  Fact is most of them could not handle military life (maybe even life without momma at all) and some could not even pass the PT!  So you fail basic rifle marksmanship a couple of times or get your fairy a$$ out on a medical and you might be able to look everyone in the eye again.

At that time he would have been subject to the draft.
Rather's only choosing was in which branch he would serve - or attempt to serve.

Trying to be a Marine does not make you a Marine. He has no claim to the title regardless of his reasons for not making it through boot camp. If he has claimed to be a Marine he is a fraud. It is an insult to all men and women who have served the Corps.

During the Korean War, Rather joined the Army reserves while attending college in Texas, avoiding the draft.
After he graduated in 1954 Rather quit the reserves and joined the Marines. How fortunate for him that the Korean War was now over and he had missed it!                                As Burkett says, "This is the same national broadcaster who, night after night during the 1988 presidential campaign, hammered vice-presidential candidate Dan Quayle for avoiding Vietnam by joining the National Guard."
The most annoying part is his press buddies still refer to him as an "ex-Marine". Wonder where they got that from? Dan Rather is a lying,Marine wannabe, POS. If his lips are moving, he's lying.
