When I get the flu I say "dang it" and spend a few days at home. If I get swine flew, my awesome (really––I take no meds when I get sick other than maybe some advil) immune system could kill me. |

The difference here is that this flu can supposedly take out the best and healthiest among us whereas the the 36k that normally get taken out are mostly old or with already compromised immune systems.

The big WTF?
Before Tuesday, only one person had been hospitalized for swine flu in the United States, which appears to have been hit by a much milder virus than the one suspected of causing over 150 deaths in Mexico, the epicenter of the outbreak.
The United States has the second highest swine flu infection rate after Mexico, where officials put the likely toll from the virus at 152 Tuesday. Twenty of the deaths in Mexico have been firmly linked to the virus. Did it get milder during travel or what??? ETA the link |

The danger (to society/economy) isn't in the chance of one person dying.... but rather how many get it, like I said... 37.5 MILLION get sick from the flu on average. It just depends on how virulent this strain is. We have just passed 100 cases in the US. We'll see if the numbers rise or not. |

Do that in Mexico and I'll be... well I was going to say impressed but that's really not the word for it... There was a confirmed case of a boy in Lorain County. I could almost hit Lorain county with a 155mm howitzer from here. Really I am not a disgusting person (in reality, I'm slightly morey conscious about germs than your average person), however I do have a terrible habit of biting my nails. 
Time will tell if this shopping trip will be fatal.

Mexico's Health Secretary, Jose Cordova, said only 16 of the deaths have been confirmed to have been caused by the new strain, through testing at government laboratories. Samples from 44 other people who died were still being tested. The health department put the total number of people sickened at around 943 nationwide.
Cordova said samples also were sent to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, to determine whether it's the same virus infecting seven people in Texas and California. As of now, tests show the flu is a "new, different strain ... that originally came from pigs," he said. "We certainly have 60 deaths that we can't be sure are from the same virus, but it is probable," Cordova told MVS radio in Mexico City. Cordova described a chilling new strain that had killed only people among the normally less-vulnerable young and mid-adult age range." The story is 3 days old. |
