Leaving a link hot or cold? I don't get it.

I know what a hot link is and what a cold link is.

I see a lot of folks saying, "leave this link cold" or "do not make this an active link".

Just curious as to what difference it makes? Why would someone want to ask others to leave something cold?

Putting {url}{/url} tags around a "http://www.url.com" address makes it able to be clicked on.
like this -> http://www.url.com

When someone follows the link by clicking on it, the people running the website can tell where the visitors were directed from.

clickable = hot

non-clickable = cold

That makes sense. I see a lot on a lot of occasions here where a poster will link to the Brady Campaign and say to leave it cold.

I didn't realize that if I click on a link from this site to go to another, that the web site I end up knows I came to them from here.
