Why does everyone feel like they need to grind out the code for a slightly different from firefox browser these days?

no, opera is the best browser out there. It's too good, that's the problem. It correctly interprets code that was written incorrectly to be seen correctly in IE thereby producing a result that is different than what the author intended, though true to the W3C standard of what he actually wrote.
