I would get the Robinson M96. I had a chance to shoot it once, it was pretty good and it uses std AR mags. The HK is a bit over priced, and there are no 20-30 mags readily availible.

You must have never held an HK SLwhatever. Absolutely the worst designed, most uncomfortable thumbhole stock ever put on a rifle. What possessed HK to produce that thing is beyond me.

The trigger on the HK is waaay too short, even for my small hand. I'd have to add some type of grip filler similar to the ones used on the AR's. I have 2 SL8's in here for magwell conversion to accept M16 mags, another bugaboo, as mentioned above. I like the M96, and it's modular theme. Try them, and make an informed decision.

Don't blame HK for this monstrosity. This rifle is a politically correct version of the G36 assualt rifle. HK is trying to make their G36 in the same appearance of a Olympic-style rifle. We are kind of lucky that HK went thru the trouble of producing this rifle for commercial sales. |

I shot with a SL8 and with my AR. No comparison: I outshot with the AR the SL8...
Spend your hard earned money better... BTW, what it is the Robinson M96? And what about buying a AR180B? |

It has interchangeable barrels, an ammunition top-feed device etc. It looks like a Stoner. Check around AR15.com for his ad. Cool gun, I wish that it was legal in California, I would buy one in a heartbeat. |

Definitely the M96. First choice of a new toy, though, would be the AR180B, but they're not likely to be available before summer. Depends on your patience, I guess.

With a 55grn. bullet you'll achieve about 4,000 fps with the 10 and that spells flat shooting. (About 1.5 MOA) Am I prejudiced in favor of ArmaLite ? You bet. a friend's go the m-96. it's very nice indeed, and has always been completely reliable. very nice workmanship.
I don't think I'd buy another AR, unless you're looking to outfit the rest of your family with all the same arms. you can always just get another upper. |

tough choices. I would get the SL8 only to convert it to take AR mags. I think both the M96 and the SL8 are a tad over priced.

Personally for me, IF I had a HK SL8, I wouldn't modify it to take AR mags because IF it becomes a collectors item, the value would have been destroyed, and also HK's life-time warranty would be voided. CHoices, choices, life's really tough decisions. |

Since you are just looking for a "toy," I'd go with the M96 if I was you. It has cool factor written all over it. You could work at diversifying your AR collection though. Get a rollmarked 9mm carbine, build an M4gery, build a spacegun, etc.
