Nothing like finding a P-51C in the hangar instead of broke ass F-15s. It is here for this weekend's air show. I just hope the weather clears up for it!

I have no idea what I'm looking at, but it looks cool as hell to me.

Rare to see the non bubble canopy mustangs. Neat airplane. It's rare to see them but there were more of these made than the bubble-type. |

WOW! That's one I haven't seen before. I wonder if she's new to the circuit?
|
|
There's also a spare/display engine back there. What is it and what's it go to?
ETA - if you post a picture of the P-51 towbar, you win an internet. |

Sweet!!
I would offer to buff out the aluminum on the first one for a ride if I were you! |

Not that it matters but hangar is spelled with ar at the end not er. Don't know about the paint job, the D model Mustang was used during D-Day. I think those colors are from that invasion.
But you right you don't see to many of the C models. And every year thare are less of the D's. First aircraft to carry drop tanks so in could escort bombers to and from targets. The sound of the Rolls-Royce Merlin is music to my ears. It's a beautiful machine. The C model was underpowered with the Allision but was still a treat to fly. I just wish the H model had made it in time to work on the ME-262. |

And it got better! Had a D model show up later on in the morning. http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/5973/img1684.jpg http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/5421/img1678.jpg http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/9920/img1675.jpg That is the #7 Blue Angels bird in the background. |

Ah so, it all suddenly becomes so clear.. |
|
Why is it called a "hangar"?
I don't see anything hung anywhere... |

P-51C: 1,750 built at Dallas, Texas
P-51D: A total of 8,156 were built: 6,502 at Inglewood, 1,454 at Dallas and 200 by CAC at Fisherman's Bend, Australia |

Don't know where the term hangar came from but if the Brits had something to do with it I'd understand. They spell tire (tyre) and they use a torch to look into fuel tanks...go figure!

D-models Mustangs were most plentiful. I was thinking of P-47s. Razorbacks were more plentiful than the bubble-canopied ones. ETA: A fact that is not relevant to this thread at all... |

Sweet jesus. Actually, looking at my pictures from Luke days, that is the same Mustang that was here last week.

I saw the D model along with a B-25 this AM at Panama City,, before the weather moved in.

there was a Corsair and an F/A-18 flying around in formation last weekend here at NAS Oceana- no idea what they were doing... didn't hear about a show, just saw them when I was out running.
very nice pics- and you're damn lucky to be able to hang out by them |

It's a classic, but I like the original OBW radio show much better.

The 'yellow nose' is for escort duty (P51's primary mission) The C-model has the 'Invasion stripes' D-day paint job... |

P51-B and P51-D are one of the greatest planes of WWII and looks great nice pics Thanks

The winged version of the M1 Garand. Beautiful to look at, deadly in combat, handcrafted American workmanship, the sound of which makes you want to stand up and shout, and a dream to see in action.
You're a lucky man to get so up close and personal with one of these fine, fine machines. |
