CDC Declares Guns a "Health Epidemic", Calls for Unprecedented State Powers!

Jan. 9 Neal Knox Update -- The Centers for Disease Control,
which calls "gun violence" a public health epidemic, has sent a
"model law" to state legislatures which would give state agencies
unprecedented powers in the event of a public health emergency -- including the power to seize "private property."

The first draft of the Model Emergency Health Powers Act --
the version introduced in some of the 14 states where it has been filed -- specifically includes the power to "control, restrict and regulate ... firearms ...."

Other sections of the bill authorize seizure and destruction
of "private property" and exempt the state from liability.

Specific references to guns and explosives were deleted in the
Dec. 21 draft. Both versions can be found at www.publichealthlaw.net, a Georgetown University project funded by CDC.

According to Monday's Wall Street Journal "The post-anthrax
goal is to strengthen state authorities to cope with a serious
bio-terrorism attack. But the powers could be used in other
emergencies -- natural disasters, outbreaks of dangerous flu or
viral strains, and chemical or nuclear attacks."

The American Legislative Exchange Council, a group of about
2,400 state legislators dedicated to free markets and individual
freedom, has been on point since the bill was announced by a press release from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Earlier today I talked with Sandy Liddy Bourne who oversees
this issue for ALEC. (She's the daughter of old friend Gordon
Liddy.)

Sandy said the bill has been introduced in California,
Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland,
Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, South
Carolina and Virginia!

I thought that Congress specifically prohibited the CDC from espousing their antigun rhetoric.

Maybe that's why they are going directly to the states rather than the US Congress.  It would still seem to be an end run around their mandate, though.

i think it's ironic that firearms-related emergency room visits don't even make the list (though i wonder why #10 was left off; did the U.S.C.P.S.C. do that or guntruths.com?) which would necessarily include all firearm-related accidents and homicides/attempted homicides.  (barring, of course, those with DOAs.)  where's the danger to the public ?????????  [rolleyes]

Does that 'firearms related' contain gang related deaths? A juvenile is actually under 26 for statistical purposes , therefore a 19 yo drug dealer is in the same category as a 3 yo. Firearms related, when corrected are under 1000. I think.      

i don't think it distinguishes which is actually a benefit for our side because when you start eliminating deaths un-related to criminal activities (which is what the anti-gunners scream about on the surface), you find that criminally-related firearms deaths are actually miniscule compared to just about everything else.

I think the medical establishment is trying to divert attention from itself because of its own shortcomings, of "medical misadventures" and impropriety conduct.

As I understand it, Y2K numbers were in the 700's.

So NOW it's an epidemic?
