Many people will knock the .40 because it is a straight case with no taper, making it inherently less reliable than a 9mm or .45 (both of which have a slight taper to the case, making feeding easier).
I just don't understand why anyone would want a pistol that wasn't .45 ACP! 
ETA: I honestly think that with modern firearm designs it is pretty much a non-issue (unless you have a GlocKB of course  ).
Also, there are many people who would prefer to stick with military calibers. |

I have 3 guns in .40, never had a malfunction in any of em. I like the .45 a lot, but I consider .40 a great compromise between 9mm and .45. More power than 9mm, more rounds than 45. More rounds is important to me, I don't shoot as great as I should

I shot my bdddy's Beretta 96, the 40S&W version of the 92, I zero mechanical problems. The problem with the 96 is that the recoil and muzzle flip(more quicker & sharper) is a bit more than the 45ACP guns that I've fired.
Approx how mch did you pay? |

Sorry, I was just being an ass.
There is nothing wrong with 9mm or .40 S&W... except that they aren't .45 ACP ETA: Warlord: Funny you should mention that. I have shot the 96 a couple times as well, and though there is definitely more recoil than on the 92, it seemed to me like it was smoother and less snappy than the 9mm. I guess it's all in perception. |

My first pistol was a .40. As such I will always have a liking for it. But I find it to be snappier than a 9mm, or even a .45ACP. I don't see a point to it. 9mm for me.

If you want to be competitive in USPSA Limited division you need to shoot .40S&W. It is the only way to get 20+ rds in a 140mm magazine and still make major power factor. Other than that I like .45 and 9mm.

I have a compact baby desert eagle that I shoot IPSC with that is 40s&w. I like it and have no feeding problems its my favorite rimless caliber.

My XD 40 is flawless when decent ammo is put through it. My brother inlaw gave me several hundred rounds of wolf ammo and a few of those did not feed right but what do you expect from wolf. |

I'm a fan.
Bigger than 9mm with equal or superior ballistics and cheaper/more mag capacity than a .45. I carry it. |

I picked up .40S&W brass for a long time at the range. Took a defensive handgun class and got a buttload of it. Finally hit critical mass and reloaded it. I shoot it in a model 610. I might get a conversion barrel for my G20. It just came along after I already had .45ACP and 9mm. After adding 10mm, who needs it? Other than to use the brass I pick up.

The 40 has very snappy recoil which sways some folks from using them, but they're a decent compromise between size and mag capacity. And right now they're one of the few calibers readily available at WalMart.

I shoot .40 super & wicked in my competition gun
(.45 was too expensive a habit vs .40) I'd carry a USP40c if I could afford one, Till then, it's the 1911

I like .40. Regardless of peoples "feelings", or machismo, it is a very efficient round, looking at balistic data, and it gives you a higher mag capacity than .45.
It isn't a fad, it isn't going away. More and more pistols are being made for the caliber, and more and more police departments are adopting it. |

I have a Glock 22 manufactured in February 1992. It just turned 17 years old. It has tens of thousands of rounds through it. Reloads, Lead reloads, premium stuff, wolf, WWB, etc etc. I can count on one hand how many times its malfunctioned. And I would credit all of those malfunctions to it being dirty. Couple 1000 + rds between cleanings will do that.

I have a Kel-Tec P40 (actually a P11 with conversion) and even though it has more recoil than the 9mm counterpart, I still shoot better with the .40s&w

G22, G23, G27, USP 40C, and an S&W 4006. Never had a problem with any of them. And I still have all my fingers.

Had the FBI adopted the 10mm then it would be as popular as the .40 is now. |

its short and wimpy
i dunno i may get a 40 one day, but as a wise man once said: its only been around 10 yars. how hard will it be to find ammo for it in 20? and how long has teh parabellum been aroudn? the 45 auto? thus my xdm9 and my new 30sf. maybe someday ill get one, but ill stick with 9s and 45s if shtf than i could buy 9mm anywhere, and 45s are pretty popular in other areas beside US so there my 2 cents |

They feel substantial in the hand, are well made, and shoot quite easily. The only complaints I have heard (and have myself), is the triggers can be creepy and the mags hold only 11 rounds. I have seen them for $300, which is a great deal. ETA, I got mine in 1993. I paid $850 for a used one with night sights.

I find it to be a fine compromise between 9 and 45. I like 40 a lot. I have several. Show me a more powerful pocket size gun than my Kahr PM40
