I see the internet NAZIs at work have been quite busy while I was on vacation.....

I come in today, first day back, log in, see way too many emails to deal with. Switch to my web browser punch in AR15.COM.

What do I see? BIG STOP SIGNS and other NAZI warnings.

While they were at it they blocked a couple other gun sites.

I think Goatboy once had a secret entrance to AR-15.com that gets around internet filters, so you might want to try the tech desk.

I work in the defense industry, so going to non-weapons related websites on company time is frowned upon. [:D]

I use it at work sometimes.  I hope he changes the page title soon, because that shows up as AR15 when you minimize.

The jobrelatedstuff.com link might be blocked also. Try it, but I block that link along with the ar15.com link here at work.

IT people aren't Nazi's, just to prove it I'll give you a free tip! [;D]

If you are using IE try this:
Click on TOOLS... INTERNET OPTIONS
Click CONNECTIONS
Click LAN SETTINGS
UNCHECK the "Use a proxy server..blah blah blah." if it is checked.
Click OK twice.

Try going to AR15.com now. You might need to refresh.

Depending on your network setup at work that might work.

Does not apply when you are using Company hardware/software. If you had to sign an Internet Usage agreement when you were hired it will state what is not allowed on the company network.

If I find a user surfing to porn sites, that account is terminiated and I start procedings in order to have that user fired.

Try getting a job after you've been fired for going to porn sites at work. It's mighty tough.

This is not a First Amendment issue, you are using equipment that belongs to someone else in much the same way that GB has the right to control content on this website.

Don't flame me.  I don't agree with companies being blocking sites, but again, you aren't paid to go to non work related site.  And no, I don't agree with companies having 'gun free' workplaces, but it is their right.

It all comes from Corp. The "IS Nazis" have to do what Corp. says. When I am working in a laxer environment, I tend to give the users as much leeway as possible. The users are supposed to only surf for stuff related to their work.

I block and delete File Sharing Programs and tell the user not to do it again. I try to explain how much trouble my employeer can get into for having pirated software. Something along the lines of $250K per violation. If they continue, I may well turn off their internet access. As of yet, I have never had to do this.

BTW, many employeers look very unfavorably on having a modem. This can get you canned in some places. It also bypasses all the security. Many times user introduce virii doing this and get canned real fast. One guy I know caught a user visiting porn sites on a modem using AOL. Why, becuase he was using ZENWorks to view the user's desktop. The user was canned.

At work I can get on AR-15 no problem but many other sites are blocked.  You didn't get this from me, but this is what I use to get past the "net-nanny":

www.megaproxy.com

I can get on ANY site with this.  Actually it was one of the IT guys at work that hooked me up.  On a side note, it always pays to be friends with the IT guys.

You sound pretty proud of yerself, there, Av.  How much of a problem is this, anyway?  Do you exercise this power consistently, or are there some things you'll let slide?  Are gun-related sites also prohibited, and do you terminate user's accounts for visiting those also?

If this works for anyone, then their IT staff is a joke.  If they have a proxy, and then can also route to the Internet without going through the proxy, again, that companies IT is a joke.

I'd be very surprised if this worked for a lot of people, unless their firewall filtering worked by URL alone.... we always did IP filtering as well, and this site has the same IP as www.ar15.com

It's blocked here too.

As you can see I'm on it.

Spend the money on a surf hider.

$50 a year and you can surf anything and it encrypts the site and data.  Worth every penny.

Cheers

Since a company cannot by law divulge that information, it should have zero impact on them finding a job.  In many states, a company cannot even tell the new company that the person was fired, only verify job title and dates of employment.  Check with your HR dept.

They might block
if they saw it too..

My boss want me to block all finance, hobby, and job search site, From my company server.

So they cannot have fun, make/lose money, or job hunt using company hardware.

But I guess I'm the biggest violator.
HA HA HA HA..

One more suggestion
If your boss like to snoop on your computer while you are on vacation.
this is what i suggest my buddy.
fill your first harddrive with legit documents.
(print quality product picture, On site servay mpeg, hour long presentation, one year worth of fax communication)
Than request a slave drive be installed.
You can put all sort of stuff in the slave. work, porn, internet temp files, cookies. And while on vacation disable the slave drive in the BIOS.

And if you ever get the boot, just format the slave. They loose your work and you have the computer cleaned.

jobrelatedstuff is not blocked, working OK for now....thanks

The reasons the NAZIs block certain web sites is , well, interesting. I know this is not a first amendment issue, its a use of corporate assets issue.

Which means the I/S shop is deciding which web sites represent an acceptable use of their assets.

Personally I find AR15.com much more usefull than that total piece of trash washingtonpost.com [;D]

Interesting according to labor law, it would be legal to go to union sites and use company equipment like phones & computers to do union business and the company is not allowed to monitor.

So if you are AFL-CIO, say you also do labor correspondence on their computer so they can't monitor your internet usage or e-mail.

My favorite blocked sites are Las Vegas hotels.

They are blocked because they contain gambling!

You can save money by booking a room online nowadays at most hotels and real casino hotels do not have online gambling. They want you there to gamble.

Ours blocks this site because it's a weapons site. As is The Firing Line, etc.

The only gun-related site that I found to be blocked at work is www.bushmaster.com. I suspect that the word bush is actually what is  blocked. Sometimes blocks don't work as anticipated. My friend the Oncologist found he couldn't visit some sites about breast cancer.

I have everything blocked at work except sites that are work related, and have a direct impact to our specific job function. In order to get a site unblocked, I need to fill out a request form and explain how this helps me in my job function. The it gets routed trhough the so called chain of command. Man my job sucks!!!! [:(] Just came about last November.

Some work firewalls block based upon the URL name.  In some cases, you can use the IP address directly.

1.  go to a search engine and search for "NSlookup" (there's a bunch of them)
2.  You can type in the address such as "www.ar15.com"
3.  You get the reply:

Name:    www.ar15.com
Address:  208.245.134.228

4.  On your web browser type in http://208.245.134.228

Another way to do steps 1-3 is to go to a DOS prompt (such as START>RUN type "command" hit Enter)
Type in any of the following:
ping www.ar15.com
tracert www.ar15.com

Some network setups won't let you do this.

Well, I do work in an Elem. School Dist. so we have to be VERY careful if a user is surfing for porn. Porn = terminated. No second chance. The only way to NOT get fired for porn is if you get a spam mail with porn (we can't stop all of them), or if you are redirected to a porn site from a legit site.

For example: a porn company has registered sever web sites as "kid friendly" and listed the websites in educational search engines. If a staff member comes across the link, closes the web page and calls us ASAP, nothing will happen to the user.

If the user specifically surfs to a porn site... I take great joy in having those people fired.

Weapon sites and other "questionable" sites get a user a warning. Do it again, and you are fired.

We have a VERY strict web usage policy for staff and students that I enforce. Surfing for porn in a classroom with children makes my stomach turn. Surf for porn at home, not at work.

Av.

Edited to say: I have only had to go through the proceding to get someone fired 3 times. I have handed out some warnings, all to different people. I have not had to warn or fire anyone in a year.

Word gets out pretty quick that I am serious when I say "Don't do it again or your fired."

Why are weapons sites "questionable"?

If a student asks a question about some weapon being used in Afganistan that they heard about on the news, the teacher is not permitted to research it?

Out of control liberal PC BS.

Try www.amegaproxy.com

I tried www.megaproxy.com today at work and it was blocked (usual "Forbidden" message) then I tried www.amegaproxy.com and it worked fine.

Where I work the IT guys are probably the biggest violators of company internet policy so they always have a "solution".

I saw a few people brought up web sites dealing with weapons.

If I determine that a user is visiting a site about firearms NOT related to school work, they get a warning. I really don't care if someone visits their favorite pro-gun web site. However, if I let that slide, then what happens with hate sites, KKK, some militia sites, etc.

Maddmatt: if a student needs to do some research on war or a specific weapon, the teacher e-mails me any links that are blocked. I look at the site and make a decision (sometimes with the teacher) if the site would be useful to the student. Once the student is done with the site, I block it again.

Turnaround from the first e-mail I get from a teacher asking to unblock a site to having the site unblocked, usually under 2 hours.

The only sites I will NEVER unblock are hate/porn. If I get a request, always look at the site.

I figure, if a staff member requests a site to be unblocked, it's probably not inappropriate.

I come from pretty free-wheeling jobs when it comes to web surfing. But now I'm the Admin for a casino. Our network is buttoned down per certain gaming regulations, etc. Everyone with computer access has to have a network access form, properly signed, on file available for viewing by the state police. Internet access requires the sig of the COO of the casino.

I am responsible for the blocking software we use. The only categories blocked are adult sites and executables. Reason is that a lot of people share computers. I recently had to gather surfing data on this guy who "retired" soon after. Someone complained that they saw nudie photos on his PC. I verified that, indeed, he had visited several adult sites. HR and executives take a dim view of that, mainly to cover their asses.

Gambling sites? We look at those all the time, to see what the competition is doing [:)] Weapons sites are cool too. Of course I control the software, so the IT group has a little more leeway than the rest. Downside is we're on camera 24/7.

Personally, I don't care what someone is looking at on the web, but it is their network, and they can decide how it's used.

'Course now, if I had my own company, ya'll would be free to do what you want.

my company also blocks this fine site (as well as several others I like to look at).  Most of it is done via URL, though, so there are a number of ways around it.  In general, though I proxy off of my server.  A few other trusted folks also have accounts on my box so they can get to blocked stuff (slo5oh, for instance).
