Did anyone see conan last night?  Conan and Carson Daly(sp) were talking about how fun it is to shoot firearms.  Perhaps not all celebs are scared to admit they like guns...[thinking]

That or it was an inside joke after they came back from a commercial where during the break they had just totally slammed shooting as a sporting activity.

Ted Nuggent invited Connan out for a day of shooting a few years back and O'brien seemed pretty spineless about the whole thing.   Connan went but I don't know how many or what type of guns he shot, afterwards he made the usual wise cracks which really didn't give an insight to whether or not he thought it was a worth while experience.

Carson Daly was doing the USO show in Germany or some such place for the support troops in Afganistan and he got to shoot an M16 and SAW, whether or not he came away from the experience with a positive impression is hard to say.   For somebody who's never fired a gun in their life, which he admitted in the MTV episode, it's hard to imagine such a person being converted when the weapons they fired were the most powerful and destructive weapons they can imagine.   Now whenver Carson sees an AR15 in a gun shop is he going to think that it's the same thing he fired on that shooting range over in Germany?

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure he enjoyed the experience but it's likely that now he thinks he's in some way experienced and his opinion is now even more valid.   I can just hear the "you don't need guns like that" comments in referrence to my AR15s when he's basing his comments off of the M16 he fired which just reinforced his opinions.

Were the two of them talking about shooting in a legitimate positive light or was it like, "oh, I can't wait to go shooting again" and they say it with big huge s*** eating grins on their faces while leaving you with the impression that they thing gun owners are inbred white trash?

I haven't watched Conan in a couple of years now, but a few years back they showed footage of him firing machine guns/assault rifles and drinking liquor(looked like scotch or JD). As you already mentioned you can't tell if he's pro, anti, or indifferent. The only thing you might take away from this is that he is at least willing to give some time to the issue of firearms, you just can't tell where he stands very well. Personally my impression is he's an anti, and the drinking and shooting thing doesn't exactly protray a positive or responsible image to the viewer. I'd say Conan is probably doing the "big sh*t eating grin thing" that you described.

The episode of Conan shooting machine guns/assault rifles while drinking scotch was a segment with Hunter S. Thompson.  As I recall Conan was somewhat worried about drinking booze while shooting.  Thompson isn't quite right to say the least.

At any rate, Conan IS one of the funniest men alive.  And I'd drink whatever the good doctor wanted me to, if it meant a shooting session with Hunter S.!!!

Actually, Conan and Daly were both thrilled with their shooting experiences. Carson was actually very interested in skeet shooting and appeared to want more. I dont think there is anybody around him to help him experience that.
Conan talked about his experience with the Motor City Madman as a positive one. He actually said that shooting was addictive and enjoyable, they both agreed...all joking aside. I thought the whole conversation went well and was very positive and encouraging for shooters and wanna be shooters everywhere.

This has got to be the funniest Conan short in the world. Fair warning: don't eat or drink while viewing, you may choke from laughter.

Daly mentioned that he came back to New York and was looking for a shooting range or someplace to go do some more shooting.  I was convinced that he enjoyed his experience.  Conan said something like "once you get over the initial fear, it is a quite addicting pastime."

I didn't get the feeling they were mocking gun owners in any way.

I don't think that they had big huge s*** eating grins on their faces, especially since they were talking about how fun skeet shooting is and the only problem is that there isn't anyplace to go shoot in NYC.  I thought that at some point in the conversation Conan would crack a joke about guns, but he seemed very sincere about it. Maybe they will have a rerun of it soon, and you can decide for yourself.

That is good news then, sounds like they didn't act in a stereotypical hollywood fashion.   Nice to hear that they can break out of the mold on occasion and be reasonable.    Maybe there is hope after all?

The best part of the MTV special was actually the female Airman's statement that goes something like, "When I first fired the M16, I almost threw up. Now it's my best friend. I know it's just here to protect me."

She is a base photographer that was pressed into guard service after 9/11.

Edited to add that this special will run again on Monday, 1/7 at 2200 MST. Check local listings.
