I want to buy a pistol tomorrow... I don't really want to spend more than $600.00. What do you recommend? I'm interested in either 9mm or .40 cal... definitely semi auto...

Please tell me why you favor one piece over the others...

I'm a hard core Glockster, but I really want a Walther P99 and the come in two calibers....you guessed it 9mm and .40S&W

Glock 19. Lightweight, nearly rustproof, good stock sights, concealable if a little blocky, goes bang every time even if you mistreat it, and the trigger isn't really as bad as some say. Got mine for $450. It even comes with tupperware that you can use to take your pimento loaf with goat cheese sandwiches to the range with you.

I also say a Glock in model 23, also look for sigs they should be right around $600. What are you going to use it for CCW or home?

go to the Equipment Exchange and buy Cheeks Browning HiPower. He' asking $475 with 2 Hi caps and its the solidiest, easiest shooting gun you can buy.

I second the Browning P-35. It's got style and function. A pistol nicely dimensioned for the 9mm.

HK USP C feels OK to me too. Don't really like the glock feel and haven't tried the P-99.

Really, if you stick to the well respected names you probably can't go wrong.

HK USP 40 Compact LEM

Slickest DAO trigger on the market. Shorter reset distance than the glock. Feels like a SA on double taps.

i just got a Walther p99 QA . id definetely recommend it. only bad thing is the QA doesnt come OD green. Mine is the .40 and is a great shooting pistol. a true 21st century firearm. the QA was developed for LE special response units. the QA trigger stroke is shorter and the same from first shot to last. very nice weapon.

Get a Glock 22, or other Glock model.

I've trained with hundreds of shooters over hundreds of thousands of rounds and the Glock has always been the single most reliable pistol out there.

Reliability issues aside, Glock shooters suffer fewer errors in making the gun go boom. Things like safeties, decockers, and hammers with shooters firing 1911's, High Power's, USP's, Sig's, and others seem to get in the way during a course of fire.

Those listed above are all fine pistols, yet they demand strict discipline on the part of the shooter.

HK-there is no subsitute. If that is out of your price range, Glock makes a fine pistol as well. Just make sure you get some hi-caps with it. Good luck and God bless you for buying fine semi-automatic hardware.

I'm a single action junkie, so all you'll here from me is Browning Hi-Power for a 9mm or .40 S&W or a Kimber Classic .45 ACP is the way to go! The Glocks are reliable, but they're thick, the triggers are aweful and they don't point as well as a metal gun, in my mind. I use to shoot my Hi-Power all of the time, since it's the most natural shooting pistol that I've ever shot, but since I purchased my Kimber Compact, my 9mm hardly sees the light of day! There's something to be said about surgical accuracy, with a round almost double the size of the 9mm. If the Kimber is just out of your price range, Charles Daily makes a decent base model 1911 for around $400 - $500.

Got Glock. Tough to beat, run's and run's. I have a G19 and had a G26 for awhile. Go with a G19 (9mm) OR G23(40.) Same frame size and jillion's of accessories. Also every holster maker in the universe has a good selection for a Glock and if you buy an open bottom holster you can carry any Glock within that frame size.
Also no lever's to manipulate, just draw aim a nd bang.

I just returned from the range. I couldn't be more pleased with my Beretta 92. I wanted a 9mm that would accept Hicap mags. I wanted parts galore. I tried several models and I found the grip angle to be a natural pointer. I like the idea that it my countries service weapon. I like the idea that I shoot it very well. I like that it is double/single action. I like that it can be fed singularly. I like it.

I'd buy a .45 first if you don't have one.

I'm seriously thinking about getting a cz 83. Brother has one of those and a Glock 9mm, they both have about the same kick, both seem approximately as accurate as the other, but the cz-83 is a smaller gun with a better, more comfortable fit to my hand, and that I think i'd be more comfortable carrying due to lighter weight/smaller size.

Tradeoff? it's just .380 caliber. But I can deal, esp. since it's a few hundred dollars cheaper than the Glock.

Give the CZ 75B a try. It's available in 9mm and .40, and can be had for under $400. Hicaps are available for ~ $35 for factory, and I picked up some MecGar's from CDNN for $17 that work fine.

I agree, or a P90 (.45acp), P94 (9mm or .40), P95 (9mm), or P97 (.45acp). Dollar for dollar you can't beat them. If you want to spend a little more, get a Sig P226 or P229 in .40 and get the .357 Sig barrel for it. Any of the aforementioned will work as well as any of those previously mentioned with the 'accept no substitute' statement.

Glock 27 , it is chambered in .40 cal and even though it's a carry gun can still shoot accurate at very long distances.

Easy one. HK USPC in 9mm or.40. It's like having a Glock, a Sig and a 1911 all rolled into one. Light, yet rugged polymer construction (Glock), German engineering and reliability (Sig Sauer) and the ability to carry cocked and locked (1911). My HK USPC .45 is my most trustworthy piece. I will never part with it.

I recently bought a Glock G23, w/ trijicon night sights. Love it. I chose it 'cus of the specs and I liked the way it felt. Small enough to conceal IWB, yet still has a full sized grip and 4" barrel. Big gun performance, small package. FBI chose them as issue weapon, but I didn't let that discourage me (maybe they can be right once in awhile).
I tried several other guns listed here (mid-sized, under $600 with N/S, .40 cal). I liked the Glock the best. HK was a close second(less muzzel flip, 'cus it wieghs more). But it cost more and was my second choice on the firing range anyway.
I'm sure I'll get flamed for saying this, but, I choose it 'cus I LIKED the trigger. Everyone says the trigger is so bad, I don't agree. The other guns have as good or a slightly better trigger pull, with the first shot. I really like the DA only. Of the other popular guns in that price range, it was the only one that didn't change it's trigger pull after the first shot. There are other DA's(in this price range) but their triggers are much worse 1st, + 2nd shots.
After firing a few clips thru several guns, I found the SA,DA switch irritating compared to the simplicity of the Glock. DA is just more intuitive.
Glock rocks, stock, out of the box. I've spent much time and money on all things 1911. Only things a Glock needs is night sights, and lots of ammo. High caps would be nice too, but damn expensive right now (I'll get a few soon anyway). I did get the clip on tac light for home, very cool.

I have been deciding between the 92fs and HK-USP40. I still don't know because they are both very good. Sigs are great, Glocks, 1911's...Hell I like them all. The best thing you can do is try them all at a range that rents guns and then you will know which one is best for you.

well in tht price range for a .40 or 9mm. if you want the best go for the walther p99. i have one and it's the only non .45 i will carry. I have shot the sig, glock, hk, berreta, .40's and non of them compare to comfort and accuracy of the walther. The hs2000 was close accuracy wise but not consistant for me. I have yet to shoot a .40 with as freindly a grip and recoil as the p99.

For that money I'd go with a SIG 239 or 225. Both would be suitable for ccw. Reliable and accurate, either or both is all you'll ever need.

Glock in 9mm - 17, 19, 26, and 17L... or whatever the equivalents are (i.e., model 34, etc). That is, if you want to shoot them. Cheap to feed, interchangeable mags (among all the 9mm models), easy to hit with, require minimal maintenance and just keep on tickin', and are just plain fun!

With the right ammo selection, 9mm can be very effective as a self-defense round. But really, since you'll be hitting targets that don't shoot back, I'd say go with what's going to let you shoot alot, and do it reliably!

Glock 19, the operation of the pistol is pure simplicity in an excellent sized package. Small enough to conceal well and large enough to be very shootable. The trigger might be a bit lacking at first but with a bit of practice (excuse for more range time) you can become proficient with it. The operation of Glocks and triggers are all the same so later on down the road if you get a hankering for more of these wonderful devices in different calibers (Like I did) you have already become familiarized with the same type pistol and operation.

15 rounders are readily available for $60.

Try one on for size and if it fits I would highly recommend you buy it.

Try a CZ-75 or 85b, Higher quality than Ruger for about the same money, accurate,reliable, excellent egronomics, decent trigger pull in either DA or SA, and with the money left over from the $600.00 you wish to spend,(two in a shop not far from me,$360.00 new,9mm) you could go buy a couple of hi-cap mags, some dies,brass,bullets, and go to town,CZ's are one of the better bargins out there for the money spent.Also simple to operate, no decockers on 75-85b's just a saftey mounted in the frame, can be carried cocked and locked,like a 1911, saftey switch easy to find, and to switch off or on, very easy to learn to use.

Glock is the way to go!!!!

HK USP is great but may be above your price range...

Springfeild XD outshoots a glock but a very small few have had ejector problems, should be fixed now. $425-$450 new. I like them personally
