They can only pack so much madness into so many shopping days. The greedy consumers tear up the shops looking for discounted wares of the hard working manufactures. With fewer days the women of America would be thrown into a worse shopping frenzy and the men would revolt over the loss of the great football games on between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Gee, guys, remember World War II?
Well in order for the families at home to buy Christmas gifts for their sons and be able to mail them for delivery in time for Christmas, they had to shop early! The US Post Office folks them to shop early! The Armed Services encouraged the families to shop early and mail early to insure delivery before Christmas. And, of course, the merchants reminded the families to shop early, as well! World War II was the first of our nation's foreign wars where it was actually possible to insure mail delivery to the front lines.
