MacDill is home to CENTCOM and SOCOM. Central Command is the organization charged with securing our interests in the central/southwest Asia theatres. SOCOM is Special Operations Command, which coordinates the SEALs, SOD "Delta", 160th SOAR, the Rangers, the Air Force's special operations folks, and US Army Special Forces.
I was at MacDill back in July, and that place is crawling with all kinds of uniforms. Not all of them ours. I was the guest of an E-8 buddy of mine, and was glad I could get to meet some of the folks on the sharp end of the stick before the fecal matter hit the rotary cooling device. The place was locked down tight, last I heard from my friend, so it wouldn't surprise me that Gen. Franks had a detail with him.
I'm not saying I'd foul my trousers, either, but it was a nice gesture. Much more so than the gesture that Gen. Shinseki gave the Rangers, which was the single digit salute.
As busy as Gen. Franks has been, I'd say it'd be a wonder if he waved as he was driven past.
