I have one of these:
Garmin E-Trex It tells me which direction I'm moving, and where I am at on the Earth. Nothing fancy, but effective. |

I have a Garmin Colorado 400i. Excellent unit. However, it will not provide turn by turn street routing without buying the City Navigator mapset (about $100). The 400i does not have the Topo included but has the "Inland Lakes and Waterways" preloaded. I believe the topo model is the 400t.

I have an e-Trex, and it is perfect for elk hunting, but I am eye balling one with XM Weather features.

I've been using the 60CSX for the last two years and love it. It does everything you wwant. I use it for hunting, geocaching and driving. I have topo maps and city navigator loaded into the GPS. |

I have the Garmin Rino 120. I got it for like $110. It seems to be a great unit.
My buddies all have them as well and it makes hunting/communicating/navigating a whole lot easier. |

+1 And its waterproof, but does not float. Mine almost got away from me while kayaking. I had to fetch it from the bottom of the lagoon.

IMHO, you'd be better served with separate car and handheld units. Both are pretty cheap nowadays, and you don't have to compromise on features.
I'm happy with a cheap TomTom and a ETrex Legend HCx. The only bad thing about the ETrex is the shitty base map, which can be upgraded. |

Yes they will do turn-by-turn directions as long as you have a "routable" map installed. Either City Navigator, or Metroguide along with the aftermarket program to make Metroguide routable. I'm not aware of any free routable US maps. If you don't need the altimeter/barometer and electronic compass, get the 60Cx and you'll save roughly $50 over the price of the 60CSx. |

This. Best handheld unit out there. Note that unless you get a package deal you'll have to buy the street and topo maps seperately. Street maps can be had for about $100, topo a little less. I've got a 1 gig card in mine and have pretty much the entire eastern half of the country, topo and street, loaded. If you plan on using it in you car go ahead and spring fro the RAM mount. Much better that the Garmin mount. |

I'm very happy with my Delorme PN-20
Around $200 Maps blow away any other units...Add $30 to an annual subscription and you can download all the maps you want: # Hi-Resolution Color Aerial Imagery DOQQ # USGS 7.5-Minute Quads # NOAA Nautical Charts # USGS High-Resolution Cities # Black & White Aerial Imagery It's an awesome unit. The PN-40 just came out at around $350 |

I'm looking for something very similar, except I don't care about turn by turn directions.
My requirements and top priorities are: Handheld Color display Accurate and quick to get a lock Electronic compass (can tell me direction without moving) Has or will accept high quality topo maps The maps are a high priority for me. I'm not sure offhand what kind of detail I can expect here though. |

60CsX or RINO 530HcX if you want the integrated two-way radio and weather radio. Not a better unit available. |

I've been looking at the Garmin 60CSx and the Garmin Colorado 400t. I really just started looking into it, but so far I haven't found what scale and level of detail the Colorado's built in topo maps are.
And I have yet to look into anything other than Garmin. |
