Gauthier, one of the most outspoken critics of the firearm industry and a
leading attorney in lawsuits against gun makers, died of liver cancer in
New Orleans Dec. 11. Gauthier had built a national reputation as an
attorney in successful lawsuits over silicone breast implants and hotel
fires, and had organized the Castano Group of prominent law firms that
targeted the tobacco industry before turning his attention to firearms.
Gauthier persuaded New Orleans Mayor Marc Morial to file the first lawsuit
against gun manufacturers. He aggressively solicited other cities to
pursue firearms litigation, and his firm along with several others from
the tobacco suits formed a coalition to represent a number of cities in
their firearm cases. He is the second plaintiff's lawyer to die in recent
months. In October, Ohio attorney Jack Maistros, who represented the
cities of Cleveland and Atlanta in their firearms litigation, died in an
automobile accident.

This story reminds me of the one where the German military attache to Switzerland in 1939, a Nazi general, was watching the Swiss Army on maneuvers with one of their commanders.

The Nazi asked the Swiss general, "What would you do if the Third Reich annexed Switzerland and our army occupied you?"

The Swiss general said, "We would all take one shot then go back home."

Imagine the kind of power that could be wielded in defense of the nation if that idea was put into effect. Everybody has their assigned target, and the triggers all get pulled at X time on Y date.

Now [b][size=4]that[/size=4][/b] would be the "shot heard 'round the world."

Actually there is some truth to this type of thought. In the Jan/Feb 2002 of American Handgunner magazine, Masaad Ayoob has a peice about behind the scenes of Pearl Harbor. The question was asked to the Japanese military leaders in the 1960s why didn't the Japanese invade the USA west coast like how they rolled over unarmed China? The reply was that the Japanese military surprised that the U.S. govt was sponsoring CIVILIAN marksmanship programs, and that their loses would be too high.

OK some doc step in here and tell me if I am wrong, but isn't liver cancer like lung cancer in that very few people get it without lifestyle aggravation, smoking in the case of lung cancer, boozing in the case of liver cancer?
